ENROLLED 2023 Regular Session HOUSE BILL NO. 289 BY REPRESENTATIVES IVEY, ADAMS, CARRIER, ROBBY CARTER, COX, DAVIS, DEVILLIER, FIRMENT, GADBERRY, GLOVER, MCKNIGHT, SCHEXNAYDER, STAGNI , THOMAS, THOMPSON, AND W HITE 1 AN ACT 2 To enact R.S. 17:280.2 and 3996(B)(75), relative to school curricula; to require public 3 schools to incorporate organ donation instruction into existing curricula; and to 4 provide for related matters. 5 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana: 6 Section 1. This Act shall be known and may be cited as "Aliye's Law". 7 Section 2. The legislature finds and declares the following: 8 (1) Many people lack knowledge about organ, eye, and tissue donation. Due to the 9 significant lifesaving impact that increased awareness and participation in Louisiana's organ 10 donation program can have in our state, there is a growing need to educate potential donors 11 to ensure they have the information needed to make informed decisions. Donated organs, 12 including the heart, pancreas, kidney, liver, lungs, and intestines, restore life. 13 (2) Nearly two thousand people are waiting on an organ transplant in the state of 14 Louisiana. 15 (3) One organ donor can save up to eight lives, and one tissue donor can enhance the 16 lives of more than seventy-five people. 17 (4) A cornea donor can restore sight to two people. 18 (5) When obtaining a driver's license, people can choose to register as an organ 19 donor. 20 (6) People of all ages and medical histories are potential donors. 21 Section 3. R.S. 17:280.2 and 3996(B)(75) are hereby enacted to read as follows: 22 §280.2. Organ donation; required instruction 23 A. Each public high school shall provide instruction relative to organ 24 donation to its students. In order to satisfy the requirements of this Section, each public school 4 governing authority shall use free resources from a Louisiana organ procurement 5 organization or other free resources that are available from similar authoritative 6 sources. 7 * * * 8 §3996. Charter schools; exemptions; requirements 9 * * * 10 B.
