Rogers Pope for his service to his community and state 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2To commend the Honorable J. Rogers Pope and to express enduring gratitude for his 3 outstanding contributions to the state of Louisiana, particularly during his tenure as 4 a distinguished member of the Legislature of Louisiana. 5 WHEREAS, J. Rogers Pope is a notable public servant who has served with 6excellence as a state legislator since taking office in 2008, during which time he has fully 7used every opportunity to serve the citizens of House District No. 71, Senate District No. 13, 8and the state in an honorable and dedicated manner; and 9 WHEREAS, a graduate of Denham Springs High School, Senator Pope received a 10bachelor's degree and a "master's plus thirty" in education from Southeastern Louisiana 11University; and 12 WHEREAS, while serving in the House, Mr. Pope's diligent committee service 13included serving as a member of the House Committee on Appropriations, the House 14Committee on Education, the House Committee on Health and Welfare, the House 15Committee on House and Governmental Affairs, the House Committee on Retirement, the 16House Committee on Transportation, Highways and Public Works, and the Joint Legislative 17Committee on the Budget; and 18 WHEREAS, Senator Pope has served in the Senate as vice chairman of the Senate 19Committee on Environmental Quality as well as a member of the Senate Committee on 20Health and Welfare, the Senate Committee on Revenue and Fiscal Affairs, the Senate Page 1 of 3 HLS 23RS-914 ORIGINAL HCR NO. 119 1Committee on Transportation, Highways and Public Works, the Joint Legislative Committee 2on Capital Outlay, and the Senate Select Committee on Women and Children; and 3 WHEREAS, during his time in the legislature, Representative Pope has authored and 4supported many significant pieces of legislation; and 5 WHEREAS, Senator Pope has served as a member of the Capital Region, 6Northshore, and Republican delegations and the Rural Caucus; and 7 WHEREAS, prior to his legislative service, Senator Pope spent decades as a 8respected and beloved educator in Livingston Parish; he served as a teacher, coach, principal, 9assistant superintendent, and superintendent and was named the Louisiana Superintendent 10of the Year in 2000; and 11 WHEREAS, additionally, in recognition of his many contributions to education in 12his community, the courtyard at Southside Junior High School, where he served as the first 13principal upon the school's opening in 1976, was named in his honor; and 14 WHEREAS, J. Rogers Pope will forever have a special place in the chronicles of the 15history of Louisiana as one of the state's most outstanding public servants; and 16 WHEREAS, as he prepares to embark on the next chapter of his life, Senator Pope 17merits a sincere measure of commendation for his singular contributions as an educator and 18legislator. 19 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 20commend the Honorable J. Rogers Pope; does hereby extend honor and recognition to him 21for his accomplishments, particularly during his tenure as a member of the legislature, which 22has been marked by his uncompromising endeavor to improve the welfare of his constituents 23and all of the citizens of Louisiana; and does hereby pay tribute to him for the generous and 24effective way in which he has dedicated his intelligence and his energy to the service of his 25family, friends, community, and state. 26 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana hereby expresses 27enduring gratitude to Senator Pope for his service to Louisiana, as evidenced by his 28superlative achievements as a member of this distinguished body, and does hereby extend 29to him the best wishes of all his colleagues for continued prosperity and success in his future 30endeavors.
