HLS 23RS-1169 ORIGINAL 2023 Regular Session HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 30 BY REPRESENTATIVE HODGES COMMENDATIONS: Commends Louisiana State University student Rachael Coates on being named a Goldwater Scholar 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2To commend Louisiana State University student Rachael Coates on being named a 3 Goldwater Scholar. 4 WHEREAS, the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education 5Foundation is a federally endowed organization providing scholarships to high-performing 6college students who demonstrate exceptional promise as being future leaders in science, 7mathematics, or engineering research fields; and 8 WHEREAS, the Goldwater Foundation partners with the United States Department 9of Defense's National Defense Education Program to provide financial support to students 10whose career trajectory will make them leaders in the American scientific community; and 11 WHEREAS, Rachael Coates is a resident of Pride, Louisiana, and a Roger H. Ogden 12Honors College student at Louisiana State University who is studying biological sciences; 13and 14 WHEREAS, Ms. Coates was previously awarded a prestigious scholarship by the 15Astronaut Scholarship Foundation; this foundation was created and is perpetuated by 16members of NASA's Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, and Space Shuttle programs that is 17aimed at assisting the United States in retaining global technological leadership; and 18 WHEREAS, Ms. Coates is currently working in a research laboratory studying the 19effects of MAPK15 over-expression in triple negative breast cancer, a tumor that 20disproportionately affects African-American women; and Page 1 of 2 HLS 23RS-1169 ORIGINAL HCR NO. 30 1 WHEREAS, Ms. Coates is also involved in LSU's Maximizing Access to Research 2Careers Program; this program provides high-impact research experience to a diverse pool 3of undergraduates and prepares them for entry into graduate programs in biomedical 4sciences; and 5 WHEREAS, in addition to her current studies, Ms. Coates intends to pursue a 6doctoral degree in biological engineering, studying the physical and biological mechanism 7of cancer metastasis; throughout her academic career, she has shown a degree of 8demonstrable talent that warrants the nation's attention, and she will one day stand among 9the leaders in the scientific community; and 10 WHEREAS, Ms. Coates is most deserving of the highest recognition for being 11named a recipient of the Barry Goldwater Foundation's scholarship for the 2022-2023 12academic year, which places her among the preeminent young scholars in the United States. 13 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 14commend Louisiana State University student Rachael Coates on being named a Goldwater 15Scholar and does hereby extend sincerest wishes that she continue her truly inspiring work 16as one of the world's future leaders in the scientific community.
