HLS 23RS-144 ORIGINAL 2023 Regular Session HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 9 BY REPRESENTATIVE MINCEY PUBLIC BLDGS/GROUNDS-ST: Requests the Department of Veterans Affairs in conjunction with the office of state buildings to plan and implement a Purple Heart Trail on the grounds surrounding the state capitol 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2To urge and request the Department of Veterans Affairs, in conjunction with the office of 3 state buildings and in consultation with the Department of Culture, Recreation and 4 Tourism's state historic preservation officer, to plan and implement, subject to the 5 approval of the governor, the president of the Senate, and the speaker of the House 6 of Representatives, a Purple Heart Trail in the Louisiana Veterans Memorial Park, 7 located on the grounds surrounding the state capitol. 8 WHEREAS, the valor and sacrifice of soldiers have been an integral part of our 9nation's history since before we were a nation; General George Washington saw the need to 10recognize and encourage military merit in the Continental Army during the American 11Revolution; he selected a purple heart as the signifier of such merit; and 12 WHEREAS, through the decades and centuries, the use and significance of the 13Purple Heart award have evolved, but the merit it represents has never been in short supply 14in the hearts of America's military personnel; and 15 WHEREAS, in our own time among those outside of military service, the Purple 16Heart is probably the best known and most respected of all military honors; Americans are 17ever grateful for the battlefield sacrifices made by recipients of the Purple Heart; and 18 WHEREAS, commemoration and remembrance of Purple Heart recipients is always 19appropriate, and the addition of a Purple Heart Trail to the Louisiana Veterans Memorial 20Park at the state capitol is a fitting way to commemorate and remember.
