HLS 23RS-2727 ORIGINAL 2023 Regular Session HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 98 BY REPRESENTATIVES LAFLEUR AND BOYD SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH: Designates May 18, 2023, as AKA Day at the state capitol 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2To designate Thursday, May 18, 2022, as AKA Day at the state capitol and to commend the 3 members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. 4 WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, which has the distinction 5of being the first Greek-letter sorority established by African American college women, was 6founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C., in 1908; and 7 WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority's unending quest to be "Supreme in 8Service to All Mankind" spans across domestic and international boundaries through the 9service of members of more than one thousand chapters around the world; and 10 WHEREAS, the state of Louisiana hosts chapters on college and university campuses 11and active alumnae groups throughout the state; and 12 WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, is a union of over three 13hundred thousand energetic, ambitious, and dedicated college-trained women who have 14consciously chosen this affiliation as a means of service to promote community initiatives 15in health preservation, preventative health education, academic excellence, civic 16engagement, and economic empowerment; and 17 WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, chapters encourage 18members to become involved and committed community volunteers in five primary service 19target areas that actively contribute to the educational, civic, and social lives of the citizens 20of Louisiana; and Page 1 of 3 HLS 23RS-2727 ORIGINAL HCR NO. 98 1 WHEREAS, the current international program, Soaring to Greater Heights of Service 2and Sisterhood, has five initiatives: Empower Our Families, Build Our Economic Wealth, 3Enhance Our Environment, Advocate for Social Justice, and Uplift Our Local Community; 4and 5 WHEREAS, in addition, the sorority collaborates with Soles 4 Souls and Lions Club 6International and continues to focus on breast cancer awareness and heart health; and 7 WHEREAS, whether making and sending dresses and shirts to girls and boys in 8Haiti, providing support to organizations that assist refugees and their families with 9integrating into American life, saluting the Harlem Renaissance, providing guidance on care 10for the caregivers, credit repair and monitoring or entrepreneurship and the black dollar, 11assisting high school students demystify the college admissions and enrollment process, or 12developing emerging young leaders through mentoring programs throughout the nation, the 13women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, are committed to making a positive 14impact upon campuses, communities, our nation, and the world; and 15 WHEREAS, AKA Day at the state capitol is a national program through which 16Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority members throughout the nation meet with their legislators to 17address issues that are pertinent to their communities; and 18 WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha 19Sorority, Incorporated, for one hundred eleven years of exemplary leadership and 20outstanding community service, and to designate Thursday, May 18, 2023, AKA Day at the 21state capitol. 22 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 23designate Thursday, May 18, 2023, as AKA Day at the state capitol and does hereby 24commend and express enduring appreciation to the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha 25Sorority, Incorporated, for their exemplary leadership and outstanding community service 26and for the tremendous honor and pride these women bring to their families, friends, 27communities, the state of Louisiana, and our nation and to communities across the globe.
