Shields as president of the Southern University System and chancellor of its 5flagship, Southern University and A&M College; and 6 WHEREAS, under President-Chancellor Shields' leadership, which is grounded in 7more than forty years of higher education experience, each Southern University campus 8continues to advance, support, and promote economic, cultural, and workforce development 9initiatives that bring benefits beyond the borders of the great state of Louisiana; and 10 WHEREAS, students and faculty from throughout the Southern University System 11are hosting their first "Research in the Rotunda" at the Louisiana state capitol where they 12will share exceptional work and discovery that is transformative and meaningful for teaching 13and learning; and 14 WHEREAS, Southern University and A&M College, a Carnegie Research 2 15institution with high research activity, celebrates one hundred forty-three years of academic 16and social progress, producing distinguished alumni such as recent Medal of Freedom 17honoree Colonel Paris Davis (retired), who received the honor from President Joe Biden in 18March 2023; and 19 WHEREAS, Southern continues to serve communities through various programs, 20including its school of nursing partnership with the Ochsner Health System to create Jag 21Mobile, a thirty-eight foot, state-of-the-art custom mobile health unit that provides services Page 1 of 3 HLS 23RS-2746 ORIGINAL HR NO. 153 1to medically underserved communities within a fifty mile radius of the Baton Rouge 2campus; and 3 WHEREAS, the Southern University Law Center celebrates seventy-five years of 4opening doors for legal professionals; and 5 WHEREAS, under the leadership of Chancellor John K. Pierre, the Law Center 6continues to thrive as a progressive and transformational legal education institution that 7provides access and opportunity to its students and community through trending 8programming and experiential learning; and 9 WHEREAS, Southern University at New Orleans will begin its bachelor of science 10in Cybersecurity program in Fall 2023 to support Louisiana's initiative for a cyber workforce 11and contribute a culturally representative STEM workforce in Louisiana; and 12 WHEREAS, Southern University at New Orleans has taken critical steps to support 13community mental wellness by establishing a grief and trauma center on its campus and 14student mental wellness with the establishment of its counseling center and ZEN Room; and 15 WHEREAS, Southern University at Shreveport celebrated fifty-five years of 16providing an accessible, excellent educational experience to students and programming for 17its surrounding community; and 18 WHEREAS, Southern University at Shreveport unveiled the Roy Griggs School of 19Business that is advancing the institution's academic and workforce priorities by helping to 20close the gap in the region and assisting in business retention and expansion efforts; and 21 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Board of Regents has approved more than ten new 22academic programs at Southern University at Shreveport, including Airframe Technology 23and Teaching (Grades 1-5); and 24 WHEREAS, the Southern University Ag Center's Mobile Education & Technology 25Center can travel across the state of Louisiana to bring internet access, hands on testing, and 26live instruction to the most marginalized areas and remote corners of the state; and 27 WHEREAS, the College of Agricultural, Family and Consumer Science's 28Environmental Toxicology Ph.D. program is the only program of its kind in Louisiana, 29offering four areas of specialization in chemical and biochemical toxicology, cellular and 30molecular biology, developmental biology, material science, and bioinformatics; and Page 2 of 3 HLS 23RS-2746 ORIGINAL HR NO. 153 1 WHEREAS, the Southern University Laboratory School celebrated its one hundredth 2anniversary of providing K-12 education and serving as a training program for effective 3teaching methodologies; the Laboratory School has excelled in both academics and athletics 4throughout its history. 5 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the 6Legislature of Louisiana does hereby designate Monday, May 15, 2023, as Southern 7University Day at the state capitol and does hereby acknowledge the invaluable contributions 8this institution has made to the state of Louisiana DIGEST The digest printed below was prepared by House Legislative Services.
