COMMENDATIONS: Commends the city of Walker upon its designation as a Purple Heart
City
1 A RESOLUTION
2To commend the city of Walker upon its designation as a Purple Heart City.
3 WHEREAS, American military veterans have made many astounding sacrifices in
4order to protect our country, including leaving their homes, families, and communities and
5putting themselves in life-threatening danger in unfamiliar territory; and
6 WHEREAS, the contributions and sacrifices of the men and women who serve in the
7various branches of the United States armed forces have played a vital role in securing and
8maintaining the freedoms and lifestyle enjoyed by American citizens; many of these men
9and women in uniform also gave their lives protecting and serving us; and
10 WHEREAS, veterans who are recipients of the Purple Heart medal are given this
11honor for being wounded or killed during combat with an enemy force while performing
12singularly meritorious acts of service; the Purple Heart is the oldest American military
13decoration in use today, and it evolved from the Badge of Military Merit created by General
14George Washington; and
15 WHEREAS, the mission of the Military Order of the Purple Heart is to foster an
16environment of goodwill among the combat-wounded veteran members and their families,
17promote patriotism, support legislative initiatives, and make certain that we never forget
18their sacrifices; and
19 WHEREAS, the residents of the city of Walker, Louisiana, proudly support its large,
20highly-decorated military veteran population, which includes a number of Purple Heart
21recipients; and

1 WHEREAS, to this end, on September 12, 2022, Mayor Jimmy Watson proclaimed
2Walker a Purple Heart City to honor the service and sacrifice of the nation's men and women
3in uniform who have been wounded or killed in action; and
4 WHEREAS, it is most fitting to recognize the city of Walker upon its designation as
5a Purple Heart City.
6 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
7Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the city of Walker upon its designation as
8a Purple Heart City; does hereby recognize those citizens of Walker who have received the
9Purple Heart medal; does hereby further recognize the tremendous valor and fortitude
10displayed by the soldiers who have been wounded or killed in combat; and does hereby
11express sincere appreciation for the sacrifices our armed forces have made in the name of
12freedom.
