COMMENDATIONS: Commends the Ponchatoula High School boys' basketball team on
winning the Louisiana High School Athletic Association 2023 Division I state
championship
1 A RESOLUTION
2To commend the Ponchatoula High School boys' basketball team on winning the Louisiana
3 High School Athletic Association 2023 Division I state championship.
4 WHEREAS, the Ponchatoula High School Green Wave basketball team captured the
52023 state title by defeating New Iberia Senior High School Yellow Jackets basketball team,
663-48, in the Division I nonselect final of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association
7boys' basketball tournament at Burton Coliseum in Lake Charles, Louisiana; and
8 WHEREAS, the victory gives the Ponchatoula High School boys' basketball program
9its first-ever state championship; the Green Wave was led by standout junior Allen Graves,
10who earned the Most Outstanding Player award after scoring twenty-three points, grabbing
11sixteen rebounds, and blocking five shots in the championship game; senior guard Trey
12Parham also contributed four three pointers and sixteen points in the game; and
13 WHEREAS, the Green Wave finished the 2022-2023 season with an impressive
14record of twenty-nine wins and only seven losses; the team also reached the state tournament
15for the first time since 1970 and advanced to the state final for the first time in school
16history; and
17 WHEREAS, Ponchatoula Head Coach Thomas Taylor and his assistant coaches,
18Uland Thorn, Daniel Dunn, Garry Polk, and Melvin Huland, are most deserving of the
19highest recognition for leading the Green Wave throughout the season; the team's training
20staff was also profoundly impactful by maintaining the health of the players; and the players

1are certainly worthy of the highest praise for winning their school's first-ever state
2championship in boys' basketball.
3 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
4Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the Ponchatoula High School boys'
5basketball team on winning the Louisiana High School Athletic Association 2023 Division
6I state championship and does hereby extend sincerest wishes that the team's coaches,
7players, and training staff continue their excellent work and always strive for greatness.
