HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 80

COMMENDATIONS:  Commends the AmeriCorps Seniors Southern University at
Shreveport Foster Grandparent Volunteer Program and recognizes May 4, 2023, as
AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent Volunteer Day at the state capitol
1	A RESOLUTION
2To commend the AmeriCorps Seniors Southern University at Shreveport Foster Grandparent
3 Volunteer Program for forty-three years of service and to recognize Thursday,
4 May 4, 2023, as AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent Volunteer Day at the state
5 capitol.
6 WHEREAS, it is most fitting to recognize AmeriCorps Seniors Southern University
7at Shreveport Foster Grandparent Volunteer Program for forty-three years of exceptional
8service in Caddo, Bossier, and DeSoto parishes; and
9 WHEREAS, the Foster Grandparent Volunteer Program is a federally funded
10program, sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service, now known
11as AmeriCorps, which brings people together to tackle the country's most pressing issues
12through service work and volunteering; AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers
13assist organizations that are committed to the improvement of communities across the
14country; and
15 WHEREAS, the Foster Grandparent Volunteer Program is now sponsored by
16Southern University at Shreveport; this program offers seniors, who are fifty-five years of
17age or older, opportunities to serve as mentors, tutors, and caregivers to economically
18disadvantaged youth in a one-on-one setting; the program is designed to help improve
19behavioral and educational outcomes for students with special and exceptional needs, such
20as those who are victims of abuse or neglect; it also provides support to children and families

1of veterans; the program serves over 280,000 special needs children through a network of
2organizations and helps guide disadvantaged students to a higher level of academic
3achievement; and
4 WHEREAS, the AmeriCorps Seniors Southern University at Shreveport Foster
5Grandparent Volunteer Program matches volunteers' willingness and capacity to dedicate
6time and experience with the needs of children so that they can be prepared for the lives
7ahead of them; and
8 WHEREAS, the AmeriCorps Seniors Southern University at Shreveport Foster
9Grandparent Volunteer Program continues to fulfill its mission of providing guidance and
10support to disadvantaged children; the program's volunteers provide the necessary comfort
11and love that help guide a child on a healthy path towards a successful future; these
12volunteers are worthy of the highest recognition.
13 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
14Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the AmeriCorps Seniors Southern University
15at Shreveport Foster Grandparent Volunteer Program for forty-three years of service; does
16hereby extend sincere wishes for the continued success of the program; and does hereby
17recognize Thursday, May 4, 2023, as AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent Volunteer
18Day at the state capitol.
