COMMENDATIONS: Commends V. Esther Pouncey on the occasion of her ninety-ninth
birthday
1 A RESOLUTION
2To commend V. Esther Pouncey on the occasion of her ninety-ninth birthday.
3 WHEREAS, Van Esther Pouncey was born on April 29, 1924, in Curtis, Louisiana;
4and
5 WHEREAS, Esther attended Douglas Island elementary school and graduated from
6Central Colored High School; at 16, she worked as a babysitter and later worked for J.P.
7Beaird in a private home; this position lasted fifty years; and
8 WHEREAS, she met and married the love of her life, Willie Pannell, and they had
9seven children; and
10 WHEREAS, Mrs. Pouncey is a woman of strong faith, and that faith has sustained
11her through the challenges of nearly a century; and
12 WHEREAS, she is a member of St. Luke's CME Church; she was a member of the
13choir; and
14 WHEREAS, Mrs. Pouncey enjoys quilting, and her quilts have been exhibited at the
15Smithsonian Museum; she is a member of Intergenerational Quilters; and
16 WHEREAS, she is a proud member of the MLK Neighborhood Association where
17she served as secretary; she is also a member of the Centralites Organization where she has
18served as historian; and
19 WHEREAS, she has been a vocal member of the board of directors of the
20Community Support Programs, Inc., since 2007; and loyally contributed to the program for
21more than twenty years; and

1 WHEREAS, she enjoys cooking, quilting, puzzles, and bingo; her ninety-ninth
2birthday is a cause for thanksgiving and celebration.
3 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
4Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Mrs. V. Esther Pouncey on the occasion of
5her ninety-ninth birthday and does hereby extend sincerest wishes that she continue to enjoy
6great health and prosperity for many years to come.
