SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 50

SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH. Designates May 20 through 26, 2023, as Safe Boating
Week in Louisiana.
1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
2 To designate May 20 through 26, 2023, as Safe Boating Week in Louisiana.
3 WHEREAS, the United States has over 13 million boats, and 314,000 of those boats
4 are on Louisiana waters; and
5 WHEREAS, the vast majority of boating incidents are caused by human error or poor
6 judgment and not by the boat, equipment, or environmental factors; and
7 WHEREAS, approximately seventy-five percent of our state's fatalities on the water
8 are due to drowning; and
9 WHEREAS, a significant number of boaters who lose their lives by drowning each
10 year would be alive today had they worn their life jackets; and
11 WHEREAS, while boats are a marvelous source of recreation, unknowledgeable boat
12 operators are a risk to other boaters when they do not know or obey the Navigation Rules
13 of the Road, drink alcohol or take drugs while operating a boat, or choose not to wear a life
14 jacket; and
15 WHEREAS, one precaution, wearing a life jacket, could save the lives of eighty
16 percent of those who fall into the water unexpectedly; and
17 WHEREAS, boating knowledge and skills are important in reducing human error and
18 improving judgment; and

1 WHEREAS, if people are aware of the risks they are more likely to take the
2 precautionary measures to protect themselves, their friends, family, and others, which is why
3 we must spread the message of boating safety education in our state.
4 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
5 proclaim May 20 through 26, 2023 as Safe Boating Week in the state of Louisiana.
