SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 14
BY SENATOR BERNARD 
COMMENDATIONS.  Commends Eli Manning on being inducted into the 2023 class of the
Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.
1	A RESOLUTION
2 To commend Eli Manning on being inducted into the 2023 class of the Louisiana Sports
3 Hall of Fame.
4 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in Natchitoches, Louisiana, each year
5 collaborates with the Louisiana Sports Writers Association in selecting a limited number of
6 sports figures who embody the character, skill, and talent worthy of being named to the Hall
7 of Fame; and
8 WHEREAS, the 2023 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class includes Eli
9 Manning; and
10 WHEREAS, Elisha Nelson "Eli" Manning, the youngest of three boys born to Olivia
11 and National Football League (NFL) quarterback Archie Manning, was born and raised in
12 New Orleans, Louisiana; and
13 WHEREAS, Eli attended Isidore Newman School where he played football and
14 basketball for the Greenies and in his high school career, Eli passed for a school record 7,389
15 yards and 89 touchdowns; and 
16 WHEREAS, Eli committed to play college football in the Southeastern Conference
17 (SEC) at the University of Mississippi, and during his years with the Rebels, Eli amassed
18 career totals of 829 completions, 10,119 passing yards (fifth on the SEC career list), 81

1 touchdown passes (third on the SEC career list), a passer rating of 137.7 (tied for sixth on
2 the SEC career list), while setting or tying 45 school records; and 
3 WHEREAS, during his college career, among other awards, Eli was awarded: the
4 Maxwell Award as the nation's best all-around player, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm
5 Award, the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete
6 Award, the Sporting News Radio Socrates Award, 2003 SEC Most Valuable Player (MVP)
7 Award, 2002 Independence Bowl MVP, and 2003 SBC Cotton Bowl Classic MVP; and
8 WHEREAS, Eli was selected as the first overall pick of the 2004 NFL Draft by the
9 San Diego Chargers and traded during the draft to the New York Giants; and
10 WHEREAS, Eli led the New York Giants into post-season play in 2007, winning the
11 National Football Conference Championship and securing the Giants a trip to Super Bowl
12 XLII, the first Super Bowl appearance for the New York Giants since Super Bowl XXXV
13 in 2001; and
14 WHEREAS, on the strength of a late fourth quarter drive led by Eli Manning and
15 considered one of the all-time greatest upsets in sports history, the Giants beat the
16 undefeated New England Patriots, 17-14; and
17 WHEREAS, named the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl XLII, Eli and his
18 brother Peyton are the only brother combination to play at quarterback in the Super Bowl
19 and the only set of brothers to win Super Bowl MVP, doing so in successive years; and 
20 WHEREAS, Eli was named to his first Pro Bowl on December 16, 2008, making him
21 the first Giants quarterback to earn the honor since Phil Simms in 1993; and
22 WHEREAS, led by Eli, the Giants entered the 2011 post-season as underdogs,
23 winning the wild card round against the Atlanta Falcons, then stunning the defending Super
24 Bowl champions and top-seeded Green Bay Packers to advance to the NFC Championship
25 where the Giants beat the San Francisco 49ers, securing Eli Manning and the Giants a
26 second trip in five years to the Super Bowl; and
27 WHEREAS, in the most-watched program in the history of United States television
28 and a highly anticipated Super Bowl XLII rematch against Tom Brady and the New England
29 Patriots, Eli once again led the Giants to an upset victory, his second Super Bowl win,
30 second Super Bowl MVP title (one of only five players to win that honor at least twice), and

1 the Giants' fourth Super Bowl Championship for the franchise; and
2 WHEREAS, the 2019 season would be Eli's 16th season with the New York Giants,
3 marking a franchise record for the longest tenure for any player in its 94-year history, and, 
4 on January 22, 2020, Eli Manning announced his retirement from the NFL; and
5 WHEREAS, during the September 26, 2021, halftime of the Giants game against the
6 Atlanta Falcons at Metlife Stadium, Eli Manning was inducted into the Giants Ring of Honor
7 and his number 10 jersey was retired; and
8 WHEREAS, Eli threw for at least 4,000 yards and holds the Giants franchise record
9 for passing yards (57,023), completions (4,895), and touchdowns (366); going into the 2022
10 season, Eli ranked ninth in NFL history in yards and completions and tenth in touchdown
11 passes; and
12 WHEREAS, a four-time Pro Bowl pick, Eli Manning played in 236 games with 234
13 starts and never missed a game because of injury; he started 210 consecutive games from
14 2004 to 2017, the third-longest streak by a quarterback in league history; and
15 WHEREAS, in retirement, the 2021 Louisiana High School Hall of Fame inductee
16 has remained involved with football, appearing as the host of Eli's Places and co-hosting
17 ManningCast with his brother Peyton; and
18 WHEREAS, Eli will join his father Archie (a 1988 inductee) and older brother
19 Peyton (a 2019 inductee) as the first set of father and two sons in the Louisiana Sports Hall
20 of Fame.
21 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
22 does hereby commend Eli Manning on being inducted into the 2023 class of the Louisiana
23 Sports Hall of Fame.
24 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Eli
25 Manning.
