Commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777, and recognizes National Flag Week, June 11-17, 2023, in Louisiana. 1 A RESOLUTION 2 To commend the adoption of the United States flag on June 14, 1777, and recognize 3 June 11-17, 2023, as National Flag Week in Louisiana. 4 WHEREAS, in the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14th, which 5 commemorates the adoption of the Flag Act by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777; 6 and 7 WHEREAS, in passing the Flag Act, the Continental Congress provided, 8 "[R]esolved, that the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and 9 white, that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new 10 Constellation" which has evolved into the flag we fly today; and 11 WHEREAS, during National Flag Week, the president will issue a proclamation 12 urging the citizens of the United States to fly the American flag for the duration of that 13 week; and 14 WHEREAS, the American flag invokes pride in our citizens and hope in those who 15 come to our shores in search of a brighter tomorrow; and 16 WHEREAS, two hundred forty-five years ago, a small band of patriots declared 17 independence, proclaiming with one voice that we are free to determine our own destiny and 18 conduct the work of self-governance; and Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 163 SLS 23RS-2276 ORIGINAL 1 WHEREAS, driven by their unyielding spirit and drawing inspiration from the stars 2 and stripes, a string of thirteen colonies later expanded to become a united fifty states, and 3 throughout our history, the American flag has steadfastly served as an emblem of this great 4 experiment in democracy; and 5 WHEREAS, with hands over hearts, Americans of all backgrounds and beliefs have 6 long saluted Old Glory and honored her legacy, a powerful representation of freedom and 7 opportunity; and 8 WHEREAS, waving high above capitol buildings, courthouses, military bases, 9 embassies across the globe, and on the distant surface of the moon, our flag calls on each of 10 us to remember our obligations to the "Republic for which it stands" and to continue the 11 unwavering optimism that defines us; and 12 WHEREAS, America endures because of the courage of service men and women 13 who serve under this standard, and our veterans are forever draped in the red, white, and blue 14 when they are laid to rest; and 15 WHEREAS, wherever the flag lies or flies, its message is clear that we rise and fall 16 together, as one nation and one people; and 17 WHEREAS, during National Flag Week, we pledge our allegiance to the banner that 18 has served as a guiding symbol on our nation's journey, and we celebrate the hope it inspires 19 in the citizens of this great state and nation; and 20 WHEREAS, in recognition of the ways it has embodied our ideals and sustained our 21 nation, during National Flag Week we pay tribute to Old Glory and continue striving to 22 create a more perfect and indivisible "union with liberty and justice for all". 23 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana 24 does hereby commemorate the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777, 25 and recognizes June 11-17, 2023, as National Flag Week in Louisiana.
