SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH. To proclaim June 5, 2023, as Louisiana Unclaimed
Property Day in recognition of the 50
th
Anniversary of the Louisiana Unclaimed Property
Program.
1 A RESOLUTION
2 To proclaim June 5, 2023, as Louisiana Unclaimed Property Day in commemoration of the
3 fiftieth anniversary of the program.
4 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Unclaimed Property Program was created pursuant to Act
5 146 of the 1972 Regular Session of the Legislature; and
6 WHEREAS, unclaimed property consists of abandoned financial assets, checking and
7 savings accounts, unpaid wages, securities, life insurance payouts, uncashed checks, and the
8 proceeds of safe deposit boxes that are without activity for a certain period of time; and
9 WHEREAS, money was first received into the unclaimed property program in
10 1973; and
11 WHEREAS, over the past fifty years, the Unclaimed Property Division in the State
12 Treasurer's office property program has issued 1.38 million unclaimed property checks,
13 totaling $727 million, to the rightful owners.
14 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
15 hereby proclaims June 5, 2023, as Louisiana Unclaimed Property Day in commemoration
16 of the fiftieth anniversary of the program.
