SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 184

LEGIS POWERS/FUNCTIONS.  Records for posterity the time invested in giving farewell
speeches in the Senate since 2016.
1	A RESOLUTION
2 To record for posterity the time duration of farewell speeches given by Senators and Senate
3 officers in the terms ending 2020 and 2024.
4 WHEREAS, Benjamin Franklin famously said, "Dost thou love life? Then do not
5 squander time, for that is the stuff life is made of"; and
6 WHEREAS, according to the Bard, William Shakespeare, "Time's glory is to calm
7 contending kings/ To unmask falsehood, and bring truth to light"; and 
8 WHEREAS, time can be saved and spent, budgeted and wasted, invested and killed;
9 however, no person has the power to know his or her balance of time remaining or to acquire
10 more of it; and
11 WHEREAS, humanity has always longed for the ability to extend or change time;
12 however, we have neither Time-Turner nor TARDIS, no DeLorean with after-market parts,
13 no Pym Particles for access to the quantum realm, not even a most excellent Circle K phone
14 booth; all that is left for us to decide is what to do with the time that is given us; and
15 WHEREAS, in Psalms 90:12, the psalmist asks of God, "Teach us to number our
16 days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom"; and
17 WHEREAS, as each legislative term ends, every Senator and officer who will not
18 be returning is provided an opportunity to address the body and invited guests, to bid a

1 formal farewell to colleagues and staff and to recognize and thank close friends and family
2 for the love and support that has buoyed that person throughout his or her legislative service.
3 THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
4 hereby records for posterity that each Senator and Senate officer listed hereinbelow did
5 invest the given measure of the finite time of his or her life to share wisdom gained in the
6 Senator's or officer's tenure with the legislature and to express gratitude to those whose
7 loyalty and industry helped sustain the Senator or officer throughout his or her public service
8 with the legislature:

15 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
16 hereby extends heartfelt gratitude to these former and outgoing Senators and officers for
17 investing their precious time in making Louisiana a better place for all of her sons and
18 daughters and for devoting a small measure of that time to sharing their final thoughts about
19 the conclusion of their public service with the legislature.
