SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 78

COMMENDATIONS. Commends Deputy Brett Savant of the Livingston Parish Sheriff's
Office on being named the 2023 Deputy of the Year by the Louisiana Sheriffs' Association.
1 A RESOLUTION
2 To commend Deputy Brett Savant of the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office on being named
3 the 2023 Deputy of the Year by the Louisiana Sheriffs' Association.
4 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Sheriffs' Association presents the Deputy of the Year
5 Award to recognize a deputy sheriff who has shown unusual initiative and imagination in
6 the performance of his or her duty, and recognizes activities that improve the quality of life
7 in their community; and
8 WHEREAS, this year's Deputy of the Year recipient is Livingston Parish Deputy
9 Brett Savant; and
10 WHEREAS, Deputy Brett Savant has worked with the Livingston Parish Sheriff's
11 Office for more than ten years; he began his service in the detention center and then served
12 on uniform patrol; and
13 WHEREAS, in 2018, Deputy Savant became a School Resource Officer; it is in the
14 school setting that he truly began to thrive and exhibit his passion for giving back to the
15 children he protects and serves; and
16 WHEREAS, perhaps it is his own childhood experiences as a cancer survivor and his
17 time at St. Jude's Research Hospital that continues to inspire him to go above and beyond
18 the call of duty; and

1 WHEREAS, Deputy Savant created the nonprofit organization "Save our Kidz" when
2 he realized that the schools did not have any first aid or lifesaving devices other than basics
3 kept by the school nurse; and
4 WHEREAS, schools were lacking tourniquets, choking rescue devices, and advanced
5 first aid, and were also in need of improved security for lockdowns; and
6 WHEREAS, with more than two thousand school shootings since 1970, Deputy
7 Savant realized that a normal day could become a catastrophe in an instant and having
8 lifesaving tools immediately available can save lives during the precious minutes before first
9 responders can arrive; and
10 WHEREAS, through "Save our Kidz", Deputy Savant has collected monetary
11 donations to buy and distribute tourniquets and choking rescue devices to his schools, with
12 a goal of eventually providing these items to all schools in Livingston Parish and beyond;
13 and
14 WHEREAS, "Save our Kidz" has provided lifesaving devices to eleven schools as
15 of January 2023.
16 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
17 does hereby commend and congratulate Deputy Brett Savant on being the recipient of the
18 2023 Deputy of the Year Award from the Louisiana Sheriffs' Association; does hereby
19 recognize his passion for giving back to the children he serves; does hereby recognize and
20 record for posterity his dedication and commitment to the citizens of Livingston Parish and
21 the state of Louisiana; and does hereby extend to him best wishes for continued success in
22 reaching his goals.
23 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
24 Deputy Brett Savant.
