SLS 23RS-1561 ORIGINAL 2023 Regular Session SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 91 BY SENATOR FIELDS COMMENDATIONS. Commends and congratulates Louisiana's Legislative Youth Advisory Council (LYAC) on winning the Department of Homeland Security Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships' 2023 Invent2Prevent national high school competition. 1 A RESOLUTION 2 To commend and congratulate Louisiana's Legislative Youth Advisory Council (LYAC) on 3 winning the Department of Homeland Security Center for Prevention Programs and 4 Partnerships' 2023 Invent2Prevent national high school competition. 5 WHEREAS, Invent2Prevent is an experiential project that challenges high school 6 students to create and activate their own peer-developed initiatives, products, and tools to 7 prevent targeted violence and help create safe schools and communities; and 8 WHEREAS, the competition is sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security 9 Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships and managed by EdVenture Partners and 10 the McCain Institute; and 11 WHEREAS, this year LYAC designed and entered a card game called "Let's Talk"; 12 "Let's Talk" is a series of question cards created for 4th and 5th graders to counter the social 13 isolation effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and help children to talk about themselves and 14 the problems they face in a safe environment; and 15 WHEREAS, LYAC's goal with the game is to help facilitate conversations between 16 the game's participants while also building friendships and making connections; and 17 WHEREAS, from the eighteen high school teams from across the United States that 18 entered projects in the competition, LYAC's "Let's Talk" was selected as one of the top three Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 91 SLS 23RS-1561 ORIGINAL 1 projects and the council was invited to present on their project in the final round of 2 competition in Washington, D.C. to determine the overall winner; and 3 WHEREAS, after a presentation on their project before a panel of judges, LYAC was 4 selected as the 2023 overall high school champion; and 5 WHEREAS, LYAC was represented at the competition by members: Diana Diaz, a 6 senior at St. James High School in Vacherie; Isabella Lancaster, a senior at Mt. Carmel 7 Academy in New Orleans; Israel Netters, a senior at Southside High School in Youngsville; 8 Brooke Richards, a senior at Mandeville High School in Covington; and Colden Russell, a 9 senior at Caldwell Parish High School in Columbia. 10 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana 11 does hereby commend and congratulate Louisiana's Legislative Youth Advisory Council on 12 winning the Department of Homeland Security Center for Prevention Programs and 13 Partnerships' 2023 Invent2Prevent national high school competition. 14 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to 15 LYAC staff coordinator, Megan Bella.
