[R.S. 1:13(B) and 24:177(E)] HB 108 Original 2024 Regular Session Riser Abstract: Increases the compensation of commissioners-in-charge and commissioners who serve on election day and during early voting. Present law (R.S. 18:426.1) provides that each commissioner who serves at the polling place on election day shall be paid according to the following: (1) A commissioner-in-charge shall receive $250. (2) A commissioner-in-charge who serves at more than one precinct shall receive $350. (3) A commissioner who has received a certificate of instruction for completion of a general course of instruction for commissioners shall receive $100. (4) A commissioner who has received a certificate of instruction for completion of a course of instruction for commissioners-in-charge, commissioners, and alternate commissioners held after selection for service in an election shall receive $200. (5) An uncertified commissioner shall receive $35. Proposed law increases the compensation for commissioners and commissioners-in-charge who serve at the polling place on election day as follows: (1) A commissioner-in-charge shall receive $300. (2) A commissioner-in-charge who serves at more than one precinct shall receive $400. (3) A commissioner who has received a certificate of instruction for completion of a general course of instruction for commissioners shall receive $150. (4) A commissioner who has received a certificate of instruction for completion of a course of instruction for commissioners-in-charge, commissioners, and alternate commissioners held after selection for service in an election shall receive $250. (5) An uncertified commissioner shall receive $85. Present law (R.S. 18:1309) authorizes the registrar of voters, with the approval of the secretary of state, to utilize commissioners selected and trained by the registrar of voters to assist the registrar during the early voting period in the conduct of early voting. Provides that such commissioners shall receive $150 for each day of such assistance. Proposed law increases the compensation for commissioners who serve during the early voting period to $200 a day.
