DISTRICTS/ROAD LIGHTING: Provides for the renaming of road lighting districts
and the allocation of funding.
DIGEST
Present law authorizes parish governing authorities to create road lighting districts and to
consolidate existing districts. Road lighting districts are authorized to enter into contracts
with an electric public utility to provide and maintain electric lights on the roads and in
public places. Provides that the parish governing authority is the governing authority of such
a district and the parish treasurer is the district's treasurer. Authorizes road lighting districts
to levy ad valorem taxes subject to voter approval.
Proposed law provides that a parish governing authority may also authorize any such district
it creates or any consolidated district it creates pursuant to present law to use up to 25% of
its funds to purchase, install, operate, and maintain electronic safety equipment. 
Proposed law provides that a parish governing authority may designate a district that is
authorized to use funds in accordance with present law as a security and road lighting district
in a form similar to that provided by proposed law for road lighting districts.
Proposed law provides that  unless context indicates otherwise, references to road lighting
districts in present law  include any district designated by a parish governing authority as a
security and road lighting district.
(Amends the heading of Chapter 7 of Title 48 of La. Revised Statutes of 1950 and R.S.
48:1306, 1307, and 1308)
