FISHING/COMMERCIAL: Allows full size trawl gear for bait shrimp on permitted vessels
1 AN ACT
2To amend and reenact R.S. 56:497(B)(2), relative to trawl gear; to provide relative to the
3 taking of bait shrimp with a special bait dealers permit; to allow full sized trawl gear
4 for permitted vessels; and to provide for related matters.
5Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
6 Section 1. R.S. 56:497(B)(2) is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows:
7 ยง497. Saltwater shrimp seasons; bait shrimp

11 (2) Bait shrimp may be taken in state waters during the closed seasons, but
12 only in cast nets; dip nets with a diameter not to exceed three feet operated only by
13 hand without any mechanical device or pulley whatsoever; bait traps; and bait seines
14 in compliance with R.S. 56:323 and 500(B). No Bait shrimp may only be taken in
15 state waters during closed seasons with the use of a butterfly net, paupier, skimmer
16 net, trawl, night trawl, or beam trawl except as set forth in this Subpart only with the
17 special bait dealers permit as set forth in this Section.

Abstract: Authorizes full size trawl gear for bait shrimp on permitted vessels.
Present law provides for specific gear that may be used to take bait shrimp during the closed
seasons, and provides for gear that may not be used to take bait shrimp.
Proposed law modifies present law by allowing for bait shrimp to be taken subject to the
conditions of the special bait dealers permit.
