HOUSE BILL NO. 527

VETERANS:  Provides relative to veterans cemeteries burial fees
1	AN ACT
2To amend and reenact R.S. 29:295(C), relative to veterans cemeteries; to provide for burial
3 fees; and to provide for related matters.
4Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
5 Section 1.  R.S. 29:295(C) is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows: 
6 ยง295.  Louisiana veterans cemeteries

8	C.  The department may charge a fee of seven hundred forty-five dollars
9 based upon the date of death of the decedent, equal to the federal plot allowances for
10 burials in a cemetery operated pursuant to this Section and may promulgate rules for
11 the department to waive the fee, or any portion thereof, for financial hardship as
12 defined and set forth in the rules promulgated by the department.  The department
13 may use the funds generated from the collection of burial fees to pay for costs
14 associated with the operation of the cemeteries.

Abstract: Changes the fee for burials in veterans cemeteries. 
Present law provides that the Dept. of Veteran Affairs may charge $745 for burials or waive
the fee for financial hardship.  
Present law also provides that the department may use the funds generated from the
collection of burial fees to pay for costs associated with the operation of the cemeteries.
Proposed law retains present law but changes the fee from $745 to the federal plot
allowances based upon the date of death of the decedent.
