COURTS/JUSTICE OF PEACE: Provides relative to justices of the peace in Plaquemines
Parish
1 AN ACT
2To enact R.S. 13:2582(G) and 2622, relative to justices of the peace; to provide relative to
3 qualifications; to provide relative to elections and designations of justices of the
4 peace; to provide for the territorial jurisdiction of certain justice of the peace courts
5 in Plaquemines Parish; and to provide for related matters.
6Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
7 Section 1. R.S. 13:2582(G) and 2622 are hereby enacted to read as follows:
8 §2582. Justices of the peace; qualifications; election; term of office; nullity; persons
9 ineligible

11 G. Notwithstanding the provisions of Subsection A of this Section, in
12 Plaquemines Parish, the justice of the peace in ward three may be a resident of ward
13 three or ward four and the respective district.

15 §2622. Territorial jurisdiction of the justice of the peace courts of Plaquemines
16 Parish
17 A. The territorial jurisdiction of the several justice of the peace courts within
18 the parish of Plaquemines, as they exist on the effective date of this Section, shall
19 continue in effect until changed in accordance with the law.

1 B. Notwithstanding any other provisions of law, the justice of the peace in
2 ward three shall serve as the justice of the peace in ward three and ward four. The
3 territorial limits of the justice of the peace in ward three shall include the territorial
4 limits of ward four.

Abstract: Provides relative to the designation of certain justices of the peace in
Plaquemines Parish.
Present law requires that a justice of peace be a resident of the ward and district from which
elected.
Proposed law retains present law but provides an exception for the ward three justice of the
peace in Plaquemines Parish.
Proposed law establishes several justice of the peace courts within the parish of
Plaquemines.
Proposed law provides that the justice of the peace courts that exist on the effective date of
proposed law shall continue in effect until changed in accordance with the law.
