LAW ENFORCE/OFFICERS: Provides for the certification by the Council on Peace
Officer Standards and Training of the New Orleans inspector general and his
investigators.
DIGEST
Present law provides for investigative powers for any local ethics entity, ethics review board,
or office of inspector general.
Proposed law authorizes the inspector general and investigators employed in the New
Orleans Office of Inspector General to carry a firearm provided they annually become
P.O.S.T. certified and have proof of qualification, in addition to a valid identification as a
retired law enforcement officer.

2. Add provisions which provide for investigative powers and exempt arrest powers
for the office of the inspector general for the city of New Orleans.

Committee Amendments Proposed by Senate Committee on Judiciary B to the
reengrossed bill
1. Delete provisions of proposed law designating the office of inspector general to
the city of New Orleans as a law enforcement agency and conferring all
investigating powers and privileges belonging to a law enforcement agency under
state law as necessary in furtherance of the authority, duties, powers, and
functions of present law.
2. Adds provision authorizing the inspector general and investigators employed in
the New Orleans Office of Inspector General to carry a firearm provided they
annually become P.O.S.T. certified and have proof of qualification, in addition
to a valid identification as a retired law enforcement officer.
