HEALTH/SICKLE CELL ANEM:  Requires continuing education for the treatment of sickle
cell disease for physicians and physician assistants
Synopsis of Senate Amendments
1.Changes the duration of the initial sickle cell disease continuing education
course required for a physician or physician assistant practicing emergency
medicine from three hours to one hour.  
2.Requires the La. State Bd. of Medical Examiners to make the sickle cell disease
continuing education course available on its website.
Digest of Bill as Finally Passed by Senate
Present law states that the La. State Bd. of Medical Examiners (LSBME) has the authority
to establish and determine by rule minimum requirements relative to continuing education
for the renewal or reinstatement of any license issued by the board.
Proposed law adds that LSBME shall require physicians and physician assistants licensed by
LSBME and practicing emergency medicine to complete an initial one-hour continuing
education course on the treatment of sickle cell disease followed by a one-hour refresher
course no less frequently than every three years.
Proposed law requires LSBME to approve the sickle cell continuing education course and
make it available on LSBME's website.
