TRANSPORTATION DEPT: Urges and requests the Department of Transportation and
Development to seek a waiver for a gateway sign permit for a "Crawfish
Expressway" sign in Breaux Bridge
1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
2To urge and request the Department of Transportation and Development to seek a waiver for
3 a gateway sign permit for a "Crawfish Expressway" sign in Breaux Bridge.
4 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Legislature declared Breaux Bridge the "Crawfish Capital
5of the World" in 1959; and
6 WHEREAS, Breaux Bridge is the home of the annual Crawfish Festival; and
7 WHEREAS, the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival has become one of the largest
8gatherings of world-famous Cajun, zydeco, and swamp pop musicians; and
9 WHEREAS, the Crawfish Festival is a popular attraction for families from near and
10far featuring Cajun cuisine, and of course, crawfish served in every possible way; and
11 WHEREAS, the Crawfish Festival also features crawfish races, Cajun and zydeco
12dance contests, a carnival midway, a crawfish cook-off, and a parade in honor of the
13Crawfish Queen; and
14 WHEREAS, a "Crawfish Expressway" sign would bring added notoriety and
15emphasis on the Crawfish Capital of the World; and
16 WHEREAS, interstate gateway sign permits are typically issued for cities with a
17population of ten thousand or more; and
18 WHEREAS, the 2020 federal decennial census shows the population of Breaux
19Bridge as seven thousand five hundred and thirteen; and

1 WHEREAS, while the population in Breaux Bridge does not meet the standard
2threshold for gateway sign permits the cultural significance of the local cuisine, particularly
3crawfish prepared to perfection, warrants an exception.
4 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
5urge an request the Department of Transportation and Development to seek a waiver from
6the Federal Highway Administration for Breaux Bridge to obtain a "Crawfish Expressway"
7sign.
8 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
9secretary of the Department of Transportation and Development.
