RÉSUMÉ DIGEST ACT 56 (SB 105) 2024 Regular Session Seabaugh Existing law provides relative to the crime of possession of firearms or carrying a concealed weapon by a person convicted of certain felonies. Prior law provides that a person convicted of attempting to violate existing law will be imprisoned at hard labor for not more than seven and one-half years and fined between $500 and $2,500. New law provides that a person convicted of attempting to violate existing law will be imprisoned at hard labor for at least one year but not more than seven and one-half years and fined between $1,000 and $5,000. Prior law provides that a violation of existing law relative to possession of a firearm by a felon will be deemed a crime of violence if the person violated existing law while committing a crime of violence and has a prior conviction for committing a crime of violence. New law provides that a violation of existing law relative to possession of a firearm by a felon will be deemed a crime of violence if the person either violated prior law while committing a crime of violence or has a prior conviction for committing a crime of violence. New law otherwise retains prior law. Effective August 1, 2024. (Amends R.S. 14:95.1(B) and (D))
