1	AN ACT
2 To amend and reenact R.S. 56:261(B) and to enact R.S. 56:261(C), relative to alligators; to
3 provide for the return of alligators to the wild; to provide of the Louisiana Wildlife
4 and Fisheries Commission; and to provide for related matters.
5 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
6 Section 1. R.S. 56:261(B) is hereby amended and reenacted and R.S. 56:261(C) is
7 hereby enacted to read as follows:
8 ยง261. Possession; alligator eggs, live alligators, skins

10	B. The holder of a special permit that allows the collection of wild
11 alligator eggs and the landowner who owns or leases an alligator nesting habitat
12 from which eggs are collected shall be responsible for the return of a percentage
13 of live alligators to the wild in accordance with rules and regulations of the
14 commission. Such rules and regulations shall provide for a maximum return
15 rate of five percent of live alligators at forty-eight inches total length.
16	C. Violation of this Section constitutes a class four violation.

Proposed law provides for the responsibility to return of a percentage of live alligators to the
wild in accordance with rules and regulations of the commission. Proposed law places this
responsibility on the holder of a special permit that allows the collection of wild alligator
eggs and the landowner who owns or leases an alligator nesting habitat.
Proposed law requires the rules and regulations to provide for a maximum return rate of 5%
of live alligators at 48 inches total length.
Effective August 1, 2024.
