RÉSUMÉ DIGEST ACT 38 (SB 233) 2024 Regular Session Miguez Existing law permits an individual who is a qualified law enforcement officer or a retired law enforcement officer to carry a concealed firearm anywhere in the state, including any place open to the public, if he meets certain eligibility criteria. New law retains existing law. New law provides that a business organization cannot prohibit either a qualified active or retired law enforcement officer from carrying a concealed weapon in certain venues. New law defines "business organization" and "venue". New law provides that the attorney general has the authority to bring a civil action for violations of new law in addition to any other authority granted by the constitution and laws of this state. New law provides that a business organization that violates new law will be assessed court costs, attorney's fees, and a civil fine of $1,000 per occurrence to be paid to the Dept. of Justice for each violation of new law. Existing law prohibits state officials from carrying concealed handguns in the state capitol building. New law retains existing law but allows the attorney general, his La. Bureau of Investigation protective detail, and certain members of the legislature, to carry a concealed handgun in the state capitol building. Effective August 1, 2024.
