HUNTERS/HUNTING. Provides for turkey hunting. (8/1/24)
1	AN ACT
2 To enact R.S. 56:116.4(C)(1)(c) and (E), relative to turkey hunting; to provide for maturity
3 limits; to provide for youth turkey hunting special season; to provide for take limits;
4 and to provide for related matters.
5 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
6 Section 1. R.S. 56:116.4(C)(1)(c) and (E) are hereby enacted to read as follows:
7 ยง116.4. Special Provisions applicable to turkey; times and methods of taking;

10	C.(1) No person shall hunt or take any of the following:

12	(c) Except as provided in Subsection E of this Section, juvenile male
13 turkeys, known as jakes, which exhibit a beard length of less than six inches.

15	E. The commission may establish a special open turkey hunting season
16 for youths under eighteen years of age. Properly licensed resident and
17 nonresident youths may participate in this special season. Any youth

1 participating in the special season shall be accompanied by one adult eighteen
2 years of age or older, but only the youth may participate in the actual hunting.
3 Each youth participating in the special season may take one juvenile male
4 turkey, known as a jake, that exhibits a beard length of less than six inches, in
5 any single special season.

Present law provides for certain restrictions on the taking of turkeys.
Proposed law retains present law and prohibits the taking of a juvenile male turkey with a
beard length under six inches, unless the turkey is taken by a properly licensed youth hunter
participating in a special turkey season for youths.
Effective August 1, 2024.
