Urges and requests the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development to expedite the process to complete the Interstate 49 Lafayette connector. 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2 To urge and request the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development to 3 expedite the process to complete the Interstate 49 Lafayette connector. 4 WHEREAS, the Interstate 49 Lafayette connector is a segment of highway, in excess 5 of five miles, between Interstate 10 and the Lafayette Regional Airport known as the I-49 6 Lafayette connector; and 7 WHEREAS, it is a critical transportation link that needs to be upgraded to interstate 8 standards for areas of Lafayette, Acadiana, and for the state of Louisiana; and 9 WHEREAS, the Interstate 49 Lafayette connector is a hurricane evacuation route for 10 New Orleans and all of south Louisiana, as well as a link between High Priority Corridors 11 1 and 37; and 12 WHEREAS, the Interstate 49 Lafayette connector facilitates commerce between the 13 Port of New Orleans and the oil production region of Louisiana, Canada, and throughout the 14 central United States; and 15 WHEREAS, according to a study by Regional Economic Impact Models, the 16 Interstate 49 Lafayette connector has the potential to create six thousand jobs statewide and 17 is estimated to increase the state's gross domestic product by more than two billion dollars; 18 and Page 1 of 2 SCR NO. 41 SLS 24RS-1431 ORIGINAL 1 WHEREAS, the lack of interstate standard facilities at one of the primary interstate 2 intersections in Louisiana hampers local, regional, and statewide economic development; 3 and 4 WHEREAS, the Department of Transportation and Development has spent more than 5 twenty-two million dollars in the planning and development of the Interstate 49 Lafayette 6 connector since 2015; and 7 WHEREAS, because of the extreme delays with the development of the Interstate 8 49 Lafayette connector and the costs estimated to be nearly two billion dollars, time is of the 9 essence and leverage of all potential sources of funds are necessary. 10 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 11 desire to show support of the Interstate 49 Lafayette connector and urges and requests the 12 Department of Transportation and Development to expedite the final development stages of 13 and completion of the Interstate 49 Lafayette connector.
