Commends Kevin Jackson on being inducted into the 2024 class of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2 To commend Kevin Jackson on being inducted into the 2024 class of the Louisiana Sports 3 Hall of Fame. 4 WHEREAS, each year the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in Natchitoches, Louisiana 5 collaborates with the Louisiana Sports Writers Association in selecting a limited number of 6 sports figures who embody the character, skill, talent, and accomplishment worthy of being 7 named to the Hall of Fame; and 8 WHEREAS, the 2024 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class includes Kevin 9 Jackson; and 10 WHEREAS, Kevin Jackson has exemplified exceptional athleticism, leadership, and 11 dedication throughout his illustrious career in wrestling and coaching; and 12 WHEREAS, Kevin Jackson achieved remarkable success as a wrestler during his 13 tenure at Louisiana State University (LSU) from 1983-1985, where he became a three-time 14 All-American and a standout in the 82kg (181-pound) freestyle class; and 15 WHEREAS, Kevin Jackson continued to excel in wrestling at Iowa State University 16 (ISU), where he garnered his fourth All-America honor and contributed to the team's 17 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) title win in 1987; and 18 WHEREAS, Kevin Jackson's crowning achievement as a wrestler came in the 1992 Page 1 of 2 SCR NO. 54 SLS 24RS-676 ORIGINAL 1 Barcelona Olympic Games, where he became only the second black wrestler to win an 2 Olympic gold medal by defeating Elmadi Zhabrailov of the Unified Team; and 3 WHEREAS, Kevin Jackson's dominance extended beyond the Olympics, as he 4 secured gold medals in the 82kg division at the 1991 and 1995 World Championships and 5 Pan Am Games, marking five major wins in a remarkable five-year period; and 6 WHEREAS, Kevin Jackson's legacy in wrestling is further underscored by his status 7 as one of only six U.S. men's freestyle wrestlers to claim at least three career world-level 8 titles, solidifying his place among the sport's elite; and 9 WHEREAS, Kevin Jackson's commitment to wrestling extended to coaching, where 10 he made significant contributions to the sport's development, serving as the freestyle coach 11 for the U.S. at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games, guiding athletes to gold medal victories; 12 and 13 WHEREAS, Kevin Jackson's coaching tenure at ISU from 2010-2017 yielded 14 remarkable results, including coaching four NCAA champions, fourteen All-Americans, and 15 nine Big 12 champions, culminating in a third-place finish in his inaugural season as head 16 coach; and 17 WHEREAS, Kevin Jackson's numerous accolades, including the John Smith Award 18 as National Freestyle Wrestler of the Year, recognition as the 1992 Amateur Wrestling News 19 Man of the Year, and inductions into various prestigious halls of fame, highlight his 20 enduring impact and influence on the sport. 21 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 22 commend Kevin Jackson on being inducted into the 2024 class of the Louisiana Sports Hall 23 of Fame. 24 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to 25 Kevin Jackson.
