SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 12

SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH. Recognizes Tuesday, March 19, 2024, as Louisiana
Chemical Industry Day at the Louisiana State Capitol.
1	A RESOLUTION
2 To designate Tuesday, March 19, 2024, as Louisiana Chemical Industry Day at the
3 Louisiana State Capitol.
4 WHEREAS, nature endowed Louisiana with gifts that provide the springboard for
5 major industry, which has brought great benefits to the people of the state; and
6 WHEREAS, these gifts include abundant oil and natural gas, salt dome caverns,
7 sulfur deposits, fresh water, and access to the oceans of the world through the Calcasieu
8 Basin and the Mississippi River; and
9 WHEREAS, the petrochemical industry that has grown around these natural
10 amenities has become one of Louisiana's greatest assets; and
11 WHEREAS, the Louisiana chemical industry acknowledges that it depends on
12 Louisiana and its residents for its resources, a well-trained workforce, and a strong business
13 climate; and
14 WHEREAS, this industry provides the most direct jobs in Louisiana's manufacturing
15 sector, employing over twenty-nine thousand citizens in fifty-three of the state's sixty-four
16 parishes and tens of thousands more employees in hundreds of businesses that support the
17 industry; and
18 WHEREAS, an additional two hundred fifty-seven thousand jobs are generated

1 indirectly by chemical industry activity in Louisiana; and
2 WHEREAS, the Louisiana chemical industry produces nearly $58 billion in products
3 annually, the third highest total in the nation; and
4 WHEREAS, Louisiana exports $9.7 billion in chemical products annually to other
5 parts of the world; and
6 WHEREAS, chemical industry wages in Louisiana are fifty-two percent higher than
7 the average manufacturing wages in Louisiana; and
8 WHEREAS, the industry contributes more than $1 billion annually to state and local
9 coffers through direct tax payments and through household earnings generated by the
10 Louisiana chemical industry; and
11 WHEREAS, more than $2.9 billion of total direct employee earnings are generated
12 by local chemical companies; and
13 WHEREAS, Louisianians' lives are enhanced and improved every day by chemical
14 products produced in Louisiana, ranging from fire resistant foam used in our beds and chairs,
15 to the nitrogen bags that give potato chips a longer shelf life, and to golf clubs, hard hats,
16 bulletproof vests, contact lenses, pacemakers, and thousands of other consumer products;
17 and
18 WHEREAS, the Louisiana chemical industry is more than just a group of companies
19 and is comprised of a collection of people who want the same things their neighbors want,
20 safe and clean communities with vibrant neighborhoods, good schools, and a strong
21 economy; and
22 WHEREAS, the Louisiana chemical industry is essential to the state's economic
23 growth and development; and
24 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Chemical Association was founded in 1959 and is
25 comprised of seventy companies operating in the state of Louisiana; and
26 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Chemical Association's mission is to promote a positive
27 climate for the chemical manufacturing industry that ensures long-term growth for the
28 industry and the state; and
29 WHEREAS, this year marks the sixty-fifth anniversary of the Louisiana Chemical
30 Association.

1 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
2 does hereby recognize the essential role the chemical industry plays in Louisiana's economic
3 development, the sixty-fifth anniversary of the Louisiana Chemical Association, and
4 proclaims Tuesday, March 19, 2024, as Louisiana Chemical Industry Day at the Louisiana
5 State Capitol.
6 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
7 Louisiana Chemical Association.
