SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 164

COMMENDATIONS. Commends and congratulates the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana
on the occasion of their 30
th
 anniversary of federal recognition, celebrating their rich history,
cultural heritage, and contributions to the state of Louisiana.
1	A RESOLUTION
2 To commend and congratulate the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana on the occasion of their
3 30th anniversary of federal recognition, celebrating their rich history, cultural
4 heritage, and contributions to the state of Louisiana.
5 WHEREAS, the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana, originally known as the Tunica,
6 has a rich history that dates back centuries, being one of the many indigenous tribes that
7 inhabited the southeastern United States, specifically the Mississippi Valley; and
8 WHEREAS, the Tunica people are known for their resilience and adaptability,
9 having survived European colonization, the pressures of westward expansion, and numerous
10 challenges that threatened their culture and way of life; and
11 WHEREAS, in the 18th century, the Tunica people merged with the Biloxi, another
12 indigenous tribe, to form the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe, blending their cultures and traditions into
13 a unique and vibrant heritage; and
14 WHEREAS, the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe has played a significant role in the history of
15 Louisiana, contributing to the state's cultural diversity and rich tapestry of indigenous
16 traditions; and
17 WHEREAS, on September 25, 1981, the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana was
18 granted federal recognition by the United States government, marking a pivotal moment in

1 their history and affirming their sovereignty and right to self-governance; and
2 WHEREAS, the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe has made remarkable strides over the past 30
3 years in preserving their cultural heritage, improving the welfare of their community, and
4 contributing to the broader society through economic development, education, and cultural
5 initiatives; and
6 WHEREAS, the tribe operates the Paragon Casino Resort in Marksville, Louisiana,
7 which has become a major economic engine for the region, providing jobs and revenue that
8 support numerous community programs and initiatives; and
9 WHEREAS, the 30th anniversary of the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe's federal recognition
10 is a momentous occasion, offering an opportunity to celebrate their achievements, honor
11 their ancestors, and look forward to a prosperous future; and
12 WHEREAS, this celebration is a testament to the enduring spirit of the Tunica-Biloxi
13 people and their steadfast commitment to preserving their identity, traditions, and
14 sovereignty.
15 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
16 does hereby commend and congratulate the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana on the
17 occasion of their 30th anniversary of federal recognition and does hereby extend best wishes
18 for continued success and prosperity in the years to come.
19 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
20 chairman of the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana.
