2024 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 164 BY SENATOR CLOUD A RESOLUTION To commend and congratulate the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana on the occasion of their 30th anniversary of federal recognition, celebrating their rich history, cultural heritage, and contributions to the state of Louisiana. WHEREAS, the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana, originally known as the Tunica, has a rich history that dates back centuries, being one of the many indigenous tribes that inhabited the southeastern United States, specifically the Mississippi Valley; and WHEREAS, the Tunica people are known for their resilience and adaptability, having survived European colonization, the pressures of westward expansion, and numerous challenges that threatened their culture and way of life; and WHEREAS, in the 18th century, the Tunica people merged with the Biloxi, another indigenous tribe, to form the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe, blending their cultures and traditions into a unique and vibrant heritage; and WHEREAS, the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe has played a significant role in the history of Louisiana, contributing to the state's cultural diversity and rich tapestry of indigenous traditions; and WHEREAS, on September 25, 1981, the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana was granted federal recognition by the United States government, marking a pivotal moment in their history and affirming their sovereignty and right to self-governance; and WHEREAS, the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe has made remarkable strides over the past 30 years in preserving their cultural heritage, improving the welfare of their community, and contributing to the broader society through economic development, education, and cultural initiatives; and WHEREAS, the tribe operates the Paragon Casino Resort in Marksville, Louisiana, which has become a major economic engine for the region, providing jobs and revenue that support numerous community programs and initiatives; and Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 164 ENROLLED WHEREAS, the 30th anniversary of the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe's federal recognition is a momentous occasion, offering an opportunity to celebrate their achievements, honor their ancestors, and look forward to a prosperous future; and WHEREAS, this celebration is a testament to the enduring spirit of the Tunica-Biloxi people and their steadfast commitment to preserving their identity, traditions, and sovereignty. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana on the occasion of their 30th anniversary of federal recognition and does hereby extend best wishes for continued success and prosperity in the years to come.
