JUDGES/JUSTICE OF PEACE: Provides for the territorial jurisdiction and election districts of the justice of the peace courts and constables in Iberville Parish 1 AN ACT 2To enact R.S. 13:2623, relative to the Iberville Parish justice of the peace courts; to provide 3 for the territorial jurisdiction of such courts; to provide relative to the election to the 4 offices of justice of the peace and constable; to provide for effectiveness; and to 5 provide for related matters. 6Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana: 7 Section 1. R.S. 13:2623 is hereby enacted to read as follows: 8 ยง2623. Territorial jurisdiction; Iberville Parish justice of the peace courts and 9 constables 10 A. The territorial limits of the justice of the peace districts and courts in 11 Iberville Parish shall be as follows: 12 (1) The first justice of the peace district and court shall consist of Precincts 13 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 of Iberville Parish. 14 (2) The second justice of the peace district and court shall consist of 15 Precincts 9, 10, 10B, 11, and 12 of Iberville Parish. 16 (3) The third justice of the peace district and court shall consist of Precincts 17 13, 14, 14A, 15, 17, and 18 of Iberville Parish. 18 (4) The fourth justice of the peace district and court shall consist of Precincts 19 19, 20, 21, and 22 of Iberville Parish. HLS 25RS-519 ORIGINAL HB NO. 177 1 (5) The fifth justice of the peace district and court shall consist of Precincts 2 15A, 16, 24, and 25 of Iberville Parish. 3 (6) The sixth justice of the peace district and court shall consist of Precincts 4 26, 27, 28, 29, 31, and 32 of Iberville Parish. 5 B. The persons elected to the offices of justice of the peace and constable for 6 such justice of the peace courts in Iberville Parish at the regularly scheduled election 7 in 2026 and their successors shall be elected from the districts provided in this 8 Section. 9 Section 2.(A) The precincts referenced in this Act are those contained in the file 10named "2025 Precinct Shapefiles (01-16-2025)" available on the Legislature of Louisiana's 11website on the effective date of this Section. The 2025 Precinct Shapefiles are based upon 12those Voting Districts (VTDs) contained in the 2020 Census Redistricting TIGER/Line 13Shapefiles for the State of Louisiana as those files have been modified and validated through 14the data verification program of the Louisiana House of Representatives and the Louisiana 15Senate to represent precinct changes submitted through January 16, 2025, to the Legislature 16of Louisiana by parish governing authorities pursuant to the provisions of R.S. 18:532 and 17532.1. 18 (B) When a precinct referenced in this Act has been subdivided by action of the 19parish governing authority on a nongeographic basis or subdivided by action of the parish 20governing authority on a geographic basis in accordance with the provisions of R.S. 2118:532.1, the enumeration in this Act of the general precinct designation shall include all 22nongeographic and all geographic subdivisions thereof, however such subdivisions may be 23designated. 24 (C) The territorial limits of the districts as provided in this Act shall continue in 25effect without change regardless of any changes made to the precincts by the parish 26governing authority. 27 Section 3.(A) This Act shall become effective for purposes of the regularly 28scheduled 2026 primary election for justices of peace and constables in Iberville Parish upon 29signature by the governor or, if not signed by the governor, upon expiration of the time for Page 2 of 4 CODING: Words in struck through type are deletions from existing law; words underscored are additions. If vetoed by the governor and subsequently approved 3by the legislature, this Act shall become effective for purposes of the regularly scheduled 42026 primary election for justices of peace and constables in Iberville Parish on the day 5following such approval. 6 (B) This Act shall become effective for all other purposes on January 1, 2027. Statistical summaries of proposed law including maps illustrating proposed election section boundaries accompany this digest. (Attached to the bill version on the internet.) Presently there are six justice of the peace courts and justice of the peace districts in Iberville Parish. Each elects a justice of the peace and a constable. Proposed law provides for the territorial jurisdiction of the six justice of the peace courts in Iberville Parish and provides that each district serves as an election district for justice of the peace and constable. Proposed law provides that the persons elected to the offices of justice of the peace and constable for such justice of the peace courts in Iberville Parish at the regularly scheduled election in 2026 and their successors shall be elected from the districts provided in proposed law. Proposed law specifies that precincts referenced in district descriptions are those precincts contained in the file named "2025 Precinct Shapefiles (01-16-2025)" available on the legislature's website. Provides that the 2025 Precinct Shapefiles are based upon those Voting Districts (VTDs) contained in the 2020 Census Redistricting TIGER/Line Shapefiles for the State of La. as those files have been modified and validated through the data verification program of the La.
