ELECTIONS/SPECIAL:  Provides for a special statewide election on April 18, 2026, for
submitting proposed constitutional amendments to the state's electors
1	AN ACT
2To provide for a special statewide election to be held on April 18, 2026, for the purpose of
3 submitting proposed constitutional amendments to the electors of the state; to
4 provide for the conduct of such election; to provide for an effective date; and to
5 provide for related matters.
6Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
7 Section 1.  A special statewide election shall be held on Saturday, April 18, 2026, for
8the purpose of submitting to the electors of the state proposed constitutional amendments
9contained in joint resolutions concurred in by each house of the legislature during the 2025
10Regular Session of the Legislature of Louisiana.
11 Section 2.  The election for which provision is made in this Act shall be held in
12compliance with and subject to the applicable provisions of the Louisiana Election Code.
13 Section 3.  This Act shall become effective upon signature by the governor or, if not
14signed by the governor, upon expiration of the time for bills to become law without signature
15by the governor, as provided in Article III, Section 18 of the Constitution of Louisiana.  If
16vetoed by the governor and subsequently approved by the legislature, this Act shall become
17effective on the day following such approval.
18 Section 4.  This Act shall be void and of no effect if no proposed constitutional
19amendment as contained in a joint resolution that specifies the special statewide election
20provided in this Act as the statewide election at which the proposed constitutional
21amendment shall be submitted to the electors is concurred in by each house of the legislature

1during the 2025 Regular Session of the Legislature of Louisiana.

Abstract:  Provides for a special statewide election to be held on Sat., April 18, 2026, for
the purpose of submitting proposed constitutional amendments to the electors of the
state.
Present constitution (Const. Art. XIII, ยง1(A)(1)) requires that each joint resolution proposing
a constitutional amendment specify the statewide election at which the proposed
constitutional amendment shall be submitted to the state's electors for ratification.  Provides
that special elections for submitting proposed constitutional amendments may be authorized
by law.
Proposed law provides for a special election on Sat., April 18, 2026, for the purpose of
submitting to the state's electors proposed constitutional amendments contained in joint
resolutions concurred in during the 2025 R.S.  Provides that proposed law shall be void and
of no effect if no proposed constitutional amendment that specifies the special statewide
election on April 18, 2026, as the statewide election at which the proposed constitutional
amendment shall be submitted to the electors is concurred in.
Proposed law provides that the election shall be held in compliance with applicable
provisions of present law (La. Election Code).
Effective upon signature of governor or lapse of time for gubernatorial action.
