HLS 25RS-1114 ORIGINAL 2025 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 19 BY REPRESENTATIVE FREEMAN COMMENDATIONS: Commends Tulane University for its vital research and educational contributions to the state of Louisiana 1 A RESOLUTION 2To commend Tulane University for its vital research and educational contributions to the 3 state of Louisiana. 4 WHEREAS, Tulane University is one of the country's leading research and 5educational institutions, the ninth-oldest private university in the prestigious Association of 6American Universities, and home to the nation's oldest school of public health, the 7twelfth-oldest law school, the fifteenth-oldest medical school, and one of only seven 8federally funded National Primate Research Centers in the country; and 9 WHEREAS, Tulane faculty are regularly engaged in groundbreaking scholarship and 10lifesaving research that is critically important to national defense and to the health of 11military personnel and first-responders, including traumatic brain injury studies, research 12into protection from bioweapons, tropical diseases, and other threats to our deployed military 13personnel; and 14 WHEREAS, many Tulane researchers and doctors have a particular focus on children 15and pregnant women, including studying and treating childhood respiratory conditions, 16pediatric HIV, childhood auditory processing disorders, and neurodevelopmental conditions 17in children; and 18 WHEREAS, Tulane brings hundreds of millions of dollars each year in external 19funding to Louisiana and is a leader in the study of infectious disease, cancer, aging, brain 20health, and many other fields including preserving and protecting Louisiana's coast and 21preparing the next generation of energy leaders through its renowned Energy Institute; and Page 1 of 2 HLS 25RS-1114 ORIGINAL HR NO. 19 1 WHEREAS, Tulane's research-focused mission touches every segment of 2communities throughout Louisiana, supporting more than thirty thousand jobs statewide and 3generating $88.2 million in state tax revenue each year, and has a $5.2 billion overall annual 4economic impact to our state; and 5 WHEREAS, Tulane has embarked on a once-in-a-generation expansion of its 6downtown campus that will be anchored by the revitalization of the Charity Hospital 7building and the repurposing of the Tulane Medical Center building; and 8 WHEREAS, these efforts will transform the downtown campus into a thriving center 9of cutting-edge research and innovation that will create thousands of jobs while reimagining 10Louisiana as a healthcare destination and a hub for discovery in the biosciences; and 11 WHEREAS, Tulane has launched numerous initiatives to keep the best and brightest 12Louisiana high school students in-state, including the Louisiana Promise Program which 13meets the full financial need of attending Tulane for Louisiana students whose families make 14less than $100,000 per year; and 15 WHEREAS, these initiatives complement such efforts as the Legislative Scholars 16Program and the Mayoral Scholars programs which provide scholarships for Louisiana 17students and which Tulane has recently expanded; the enrollment of Louisiana students 18attending Tulane has steadily increased, and a growing percentage of Tulane alumni are 19staying in Louisiana after graduation. 20 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the 21Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Tulane University for its vital research and 22educational contributions to the state of Louisiana and does hereby extend enduring 23appreciation to the university for its efforts to educate and improve the lives of Louisianians 24through cutting-edge scholarship, research, and healthcare.
