SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH: Commends Southern University on the occasion of its
one hundred forty-fifth anniversary and designates April 22, 2025, as Southern
University Day at the state capitol
1 A RESOLUTION
2To commend Southern University on the occasion of its one hundred forty-fifth anniversary
3 and to designate Tuesday, April 22, 2025, as Southern University Day at the state
4 capitol.
5 WHEREAS, Southern University was established in 1880 and is proudly celebrating
6the one hundred forty-fifth anniversary of its founding in 2025, marking over a century of
7commitment to academic achievement, leadership, and service to the citizens of Louisiana
8and the nation; and
9 WHEREAS, the Southern University System is the nation's only historically black
10university system, comprising five campuses that serve as pillars of higher learning and
11community engagement: Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, Southern
12University at New Orleans, Southern University at Shreveport, the Southern University
13Agricultural Research and Extension Center, and the Southern University Law Center; and
14 WHEREAS, Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge is the flagship
15of the system and a leading producer of African American graduates in science, technology,
16engineering, and mathematics (STEM); the university also holds a nationally recognized
17nursing program; and
18 WHEREAS, Southern University at New Orleans plays a critical role in expanding
19access to higher education in the Greater New Orleans area, with strong programs in social

1work, criminal justice, business, and now nursing and cybersecurity; it has been instrumental
2in the city's recovery and resilience following Hurricane Katrina; and
3 WHEREAS, Southern University at Shreveport continues to serve as a vital access
4point to higher education in North Louisiana, offering robust programs in allied health,
5technology, and workforce development that meet the region's economic and employment
6needs; and
7 WHEREAS, the Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center
8is a nationally recognized land grant institution that provides groundbreaking research,
9extension services, and community-based programs aimed at improving quality of life for
10Louisiana citizens, particularly in rural and underserved areas; and
11 WHEREAS, the Southern University Law Center is known for its inclusive and
12accessible legal education and has produced generations of attorneys, judges, and public
13servants who advocate for justice, civil rights, and equity throughout Louisiana and the
14nation; and
15 WHEREAS, Southern University Day at the state capitol provides an opportunity for
16legislators, community members, students, and alumni to come together in celebration of the
17system's enduring legacy and ongoing contributions to education, leadership, and community
18advancement.
19 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
20Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Southern University on the occasion of its
21one hundred forty-fifth anniversary and does hereby designate Tuesday, April 22, 2025, as
22Southern University Day at the state capitol.
