SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH: Designates May 9, 2025, as AmeriCorps Seniors Foster
Grandparent Volunteer Day and commends the AmeriCorps Seniors Southern
University at Shreveport Caddo/Bossier/DeSoto Foster Grandparent Volunteer
Program for forty-five years of service

2To designate Friday, May 9, 2025, as AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent Volunteer
3 Day and to commend the AmeriCorps Seniors Southern University at Shreveport
4 Caddo/Bossier/DeSoto Foster Grandparent Volunteer Program for forty-five years
5 of service.
6 WHEREAS, AmeriCorps promotes bridge-building, collaboration, and leadership,
7and its programs unite Americans from different backgrounds, generations, and geographic
8locations; and
9 WHEREAS, for more than five decades, millions of AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers
10have participated in the Foster Grandparent Volunteer Program and played an important role
11in strengthening communities by sharing their experience, knowledge, and accomplishments
12with the individuals they serve; and
13 WHEREAS, the AmeriCorps Foster Grandparent Volunteer Program is a nationwide
14program that offers seniors who are fifty-five years of age or older an opportunity to serve
15as mentors, tutors, and caregivers to economically disadvantaged youth; the program also
16helps to improve behavioral and educational outcomes for students with special and
17exceptional needs, cares for children who suffer from abuse or neglect, and provides support
18to children of veterans or those with deployed family members; and

1 WHEREAS, the AmeriCorps Foster Grandparent Volunteer Program serves over two
2hundred eighty thousand special needs children through a network of various organizations
3and helps to guide students to higher academic achievement; and
4 WHEREAS, the AmeriCorps Seniors Southern University at Shreveport
5Caddo/Bossier/DeSoto Foster Grandparent Volunteer Program is fueled by the support of
6volunteers from Caddo, Bossier, and DeSoto Parishes; these compassionate individuals
7donate their time and experience to serve the needs of children and prepare them for life; and
8 WHEREAS, the AmeriCorps Seniors Southern University at Shreveport
9Caddo/Bossier/DeSoto Foster Grandparent Volunteer Program continues to fulfill its mission
10of providing guidance and support to disadvantaged children, and the volunteers who
11support the program provide the comfort and love a child needs to grow and succeed.
12 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
13Legislature of Louisiana does hereby designate Friday, May 9, 2025, as AmeriCorps Seniors
14Foster Grandparent Volunteer Day and does hereby commend the AmeriCorps Seniors
15Southern University at Shreveport Caddo/Bossier/DeSoto Foster Grandparent Volunteer
16Program for forty-five years of service.
