HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 95
BY REPRESENTATIVE OWEN
MILITARY AFFAIRS:  Commemorates the end of the Korean War
1	A RESOLUTION
2To celebrate the anniversary of the end of the Korean War, to honor the sacrifices of
3 Louisiana's veterans, and to recognize their contributions to preserving democracy
4 in the Korean Peninsula.
5 WHEREAS, at the conclusion of World War II, an agreement between the United
6States and the former Soviet Union divided the country of Korea at the arbitrary border
7commensurate with the 38th parallel; and
8 WHEREAS, between 1945 and 1949, the Korean Peninsula was split into a
9communist North and a democratic South; and
10 WHEREAS, on June 25th, 1949, the North Koreans attacked the South Koreans in
11the name of communism and for the purpose of consolidating the peninsula under the rule
12of Stalinist tyrants; and
13 WHEREAS, the United States entered the fight in 1950 to protect democracy in the
14region; and
15 WHEREAS, over thirty-six thousand American warriors lost their lives in this
16conflict, alongside one hundred thirty-seven thousand South Koreans and four thousand
17allies from other countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, and Turkey; and
18 WHEREAS, two thousand fifty-five of Louisiana's sons lost their lives in the Korean
19War, making the ultimate sacrifice in defense of freedom; and

1 WHEREAS the war lasted for a full four years, ending with an armistice that was
2signed to cease hostilities in July of 1953, and the establishment of a two and one-half mile
3demilitarized zone, which exists to this day; and
4 WHEREAS, we honor those Louisiana Korean War veterans who have returned
5home, whose courage and service continue to inspire our state and nation.
6 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
7Legislature of Louisiana does hereby celebrate all those who sacrificed in the name of
8freedom and the ending of the Korean War in July of 1953.
9 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that  the House of Representatives of the Legislature
10of Louisiana hereby commemorates the anniversary of the Korean Armistice Agreement on
11July 27, 1953, and expresses profound gratitude to all Korean War veterans, especially those
12from Louisiana, for their selfless dedication to liberty and justice.
13 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
14Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs and the Louisiana Korean War Veterans
15Association.
