SCHOOLS. Authorizes nonpublic school students to participate in public school activities.

1	AN ACT
2 To enact R.S. 17:176.3, relative to certain students participation in public school activities;
3 to provide relative to extracurricular and interscholastic activities at public schools;
4 to provide for requirements of eligibility; and to provide for related matters.
5 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
6 Section 1. R.S. 17:176.3 is hereby enacted to read as follows:
7 ยง176.3. Extracurricular activities and interscholastic athletics; participation by
8	nonpublic school students
9	A. A middle school or high school student who attends a nonpublic
10 school that has been approved by the State Board of Elementary and Secondary
11 Education may be eligible to participate in an extracurricular activity or
12 interscholastic sport at a public middle or high school, as appropriate for the
13 nonpublic school student's grade level, if the nonpublic school in which the
14 student is enrolled does not offer the extracurricular activity or interscholastic
15 sport and the student lives in the attendance zone of the public school.
16	B. The nonpublic school student shall try out or apply for
17 extracurricular activities or interscholastic athletics at the public school in the

1 same manner, time, and place as the students who attend the public school.
2	C. If the approved nonpublic school student meets the qualifications for
3 an extracurricular activities club or an interscholastic athletics team, the
4 student shall be required to maintain all requirements for participation that a
5 public school student would have to meet in order to participate in the
6 extracurricular activity or the interscholastic athletics activity, including but
7 not limited to maintaining a minimum grade point average and complying with
8 disciplinary standards. Failure to meet the requirements shall be grounds for
9 the school to remove the approved nonpublic school student from participation
10 in the extracurricular activities club or the interscholastic athletics team.

Proposed law provides that a BESE approved nonpublic school student may be eligible to
participate in an extracurricular activity or interscholastic sport if the nonpublic school the
student is enrolled in does not offer the activity or sport and the student lives in the
attendance zone of the public school.
Proposed law requires a nonpublic school student to try out or apply for a public school
activity or sport in the same manner, time, and place as the public school students.
Proposed law provides that a nonpublic school student must maintain all requirements for
participation that a public school student would in order to participate in the activity or sport.
Proposed law provides that failure to meet the requirements for participation will be a cause
for removing the student from the activity or team.
Effective August 1, 2025.
