Commends and celebrates the Elmer Candy Corporation and recognizes Tuesday, May 6, 2025, as Elmer Chocolate Day at the Louisiana State Capitol. 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2 To commend and celebrate the Elmer Candy Corporation and recognize Tuesday, May 6, 3 2025, as Elmer Chocolate Day at the Louisiana State Capitol. 4 WHEREAS, Elmer Candy Corporation, located in Ponchatoula, is the second largest 5 heart box manufacturer in the country, manufacturing more than 46 million hearts annually; 6 and 7 WHEREAS, Elmer Candy Corporation is renowned for its traditional Easter treats; 8 including Gold Brick, Heavenly Hash, and Pecan Eggs, cherished by locals; and 9 WHEREAS, the forerunner of the Elmer Candy Corporation was the Miller Candy 10 Corporation, which was founded in New Orleans in 1855, by former pastry chef Christopher 11 Henry Miller; and 12 WHEREAS, Miller's son-in-law, Augustus Elmer, eventually joined him in the 13 business as a partner; and 14 WHEREAS, in 1914, Elmer's sons joined the business and the corporation became 15 known as Elmer Candy Corporation; and 16 WHEREAS, the origin of Heavenly Hash Eggs can be traced to 1923, while Gold 17 Brick Eggs were first made in 1936; along with Pecan Eggs, these three iconic Easter season 18 favorites outsell national brands along the Gulf Coast; and Page 1 of 2 SCR NO. 3 SLS 25RS-376 ORIGINAL 1 WHEREAS, in the 1960s, Roy Nelson became a partner in the enterprise, eventually 2 purchasing the entire company from the Elmer family, and encouraged his son, Allan, to join 3 the endeavor; and 4 WHEREAS, the two men refocused the company's offerings by concentrating on 5 seasonal chocolates, rather than everyday candy and snacks; and 6 WHEREAS, in 2016, the company expanded its facility footprint by adding an 7 additional 70,000 square feet to its already 330,000 square foot factory; and 8 WHEREAS, the Elmer Candy Corporation leads the industry with the highest level 9 of quality control, food safety, and industry innovation; and 10 WHEREAS, today, the third generation of the Nelson family operates the Elmer 11 Candy Corporation and the company continues to create sweet memories for new 12 generations of candy lovers. 13 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 14 commend and celebrate the Elmer Candy Corporation, the oldest family-owned chocolate 15 company in the country, and recognize Tuesday, May 6, 2025, as Elmer Chocolate Day at 16 the Louisiana State Capitol. 17 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the 18 Nelson family of Elmer Candy Corporation.
