Impact

The impact of SB0094 on state laws is significant as it helps to streamline and organize the legal codes of the state. By updating the Tennessee Code Annotated with recent public acts, the bill ensures that the laws remain relevant and accessible. This codification can help legal practitioners, government officials, and the public understand and reference the applicable laws without navigating outdated statutes. Moreover, the bill repeals any parts of acts that are encompassed within this codification, simplifying the legal landscape and potentially reducing redundancies in the law.

Summary

Senate Bill 94 aims to revise and codify the general and public statutes of the State of Tennessee. This bill incorporates various acts passed during the 2022 session into the Tennessee Code Annotated, thus updating the state's body of law. One key feature of this bill is its declaration that in cases of conflict between the newly codified acts and any past legislation, the latest acts will take precedence, ensuring coherence within the state laws and preventing legal ambiguities. The annual codification is a routine process undertaken by the General Assembly, and SB0094 follows this established tradition.

Sentiment

The sentiment around SB0094 appears to be generally supportive, with a consensus among legislators regarding the necessity of regular updates to the state’s legal framework. The smooth passage of the bill, which saw unanimous support in a vote (30 yeas to 0 nays), indicates a shared belief in its importance for maintaining order in the legal system. This positive sentiment reflects a broader recognition of the importance of keeping legal clauses updated and relevant in response to changing societal needs.

Contention

While SB0094 does not present any decisive points of contention, debates surrounding codification can often include concerns about thoroughness and the potential oversight of certain acts during the codification process. However, given the nature of this bill as a routine legislative effort aimed at improving coherence in state statutes, it seems to have avoided significant opposition. The bill's passage suggests that legislators largely agree on the process and implications of codifying the laws in this manner, focusing on the benefits of clarity and accessibility in the legal codes.
