[SIMILAR MATTER FILED IN PREVIOUS SESSION SEE HOUSE, NO. 1344 OF 2021-2022.] The Commonwealth of Massachusetts _______________ In the One Hundred and Ninety-Third General Court (2023-2024) _______________ An Act relative to the expansion of the valedictorian tuition waiver program. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows: 1 SECTION 1. Section 19 of chapter 15A of the General Laws, as appearing in the 2020 2Official Edition, is hereby amended by inserting, after the seventh paragraph, the following new 3paragraph:- 4 The program shall provide tuition and mandatory fee waivers to any resident of the 5commonwealth who has been designated as a valedictorian by a public or private high school 6within the commonwealth. The tuition and mandatory fee waivers shall be provided to a student 7for not more than four years following enrollment as a student at a qualifying public institution. 8If the student designated as a valedictorian does not utilize the valedictorian tuition and fee 9waiver, the tuition and fee waiver shall not be offered to the salutatorian. The commonwealth, 2 of 2 10not the institutions of public higher education, shall bear the cost of such tuition and fee waivers 11for Massachusetts valedictorians. 12 SECTION 2. The tuition and fee waivers of this act shall take effect and be provided to 13Massachusetts valedictorians who graduate from a Massachusetts public or private high school 14beginning in or after 2023.
