Honan for legislation to direct the Massachusetts Department of Transportation to conduct a study of establishing direct bus rapid transit between Kendall Square in Cambridge and the Allston, North Brighton and Longwood Medical areas in Boston. [SIMILAR MATTER FILED IN PREVIOUS SESSION SEE HOUSE, NO. 3386 OF 2023-2024.] The Commonwealth of Massachusetts _______________ In the One Hundred and Ninety-Fourth General Court (2025-2026) _______________ An Act relative to establishing the science corridor. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows: 1 SECTION 1. Notwithstanding any general or special law to the contrary, the 2Massachusetts Department of Transportation shall conduct a comprehensive transit service 3assessment relative to establishing a minimum of future direct bus rapid transit between Kendall 4Square in Cambridge, Allston, North Brighton and the Longwood Medical Area in Boston. 5 SECTION 2. The assessment shall focus on identifying the transit infrastructure that 6needs to be preserved for a minimum of future direct bus rapid transit alternatives between 7Kendall Square in Cambridge, Allston, North Brighton and the Longwood Medical Area in 8Boston, reviewing the prospect of constructing and operating on existing rights of way, 9analyzing the impact of planned, designed, funded or under construction transportation or 2 of 2 10development projects nearby, defining the potential market for these future transit services, and 11evaluating the potential economic benefits to the region and to the Commonwealth as a whole. 12 SECTION 3. The department shall make recommendations on the preferred route and 13how to preserve the transit infrastructure necessary for a minimum of future direct bus rapid 14transit alternatives between Kendall Square in Cambridge, Allston, North Brighton and the 15Longwood Medical Area in Boston, taking into consideration nearby transportation and 16development projects that have been studied, designed, funded, or are under construction. The 17department shall file a report with the clerks of the house and senate, the house and senate 18committee on ways and means, and the joint committee on transportation not later than July 31, 192022.
