A BILL ENTITLED 
 
AN ACT concerning 1 
 
Environment – Statewide Green Business Certification Program 2 
 
FOR the purpose of requiring the Department of the Environment to establish and 3 
administer a statewide green business certification program to recognize businesses 4 
operating in a manner that reduces their environmental footprint and provide 5 
consumers with information on how to identify those businesses; requiring the 6 
Department to update and enhance the green business certification program in 7 
consultation with the Montgomery County Green Business Certification Program; 8 
and generally relating to the establishment of a statewide green business 9 
certification program. 10

Section 1–901 to be under the new subtitle “Subtitle 9. Green Business Certification 13 
Program” 14

 SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF MARYLAND, 17 
That the Laws of Maryland read as follows: 18 
 
Article – Environment 19 
 
SUBTITLE 9. GREEN BUSINESS CERTIFICATION PROGRAM. 20 
 
1–901. 21 
 
 (A) THE DEPARTMENT SHALL ESTA BLISH AND ADMINISTER A STATEWIDE 22 
GREEN BUSINESS CERTI FICATION PROGRAM . 23

 (B) THE GREEN BUSINESS CE RTIFICATION PROGRAM SHALL: 1 
 
 (1) RECOGNIZE BUSINESSES THAT OPERATE IN A MA NNER THAT 2 
REDUCES THEIR ENVIRO NMENTAL FOOTPRINT ; AND  3 
 
 (2) PROVIDE CONSUMERS WIT H A WAY TO IDENTIFY BUSINESSES 4 
THAT HAVE BEEN CERTI FIED AS GREEN BUSINE SSES. 5 
 
 (C) THE DEPARTMENT MAY ADOPT REGULATIONS TO CARRY OUT THIS 6 
SECTION.  7 
 
 SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That the Department shall update 8 
and enhance the statewide green business certification program required under Section 1 9 
of this Act in consultation with the Montgomery County Green Business Certification 10 
Program. 11 
 
 SECTION 3. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall take effect July 12 
1, 2022. 13
