BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF MARYLAND, 16 That the Laws of Maryland read as follows: 17 Article – Courts and Judicial Proceedings 18 2–319. 19 2 SENATE BILL 341 (a) This section applies only in Caroline County. 1 (b) The Sheriff of Caroline County shall receive an annual salary equal to [80%] 2 85% of the annual salary of the State’s Attorney for Caroline County. 3 (c) (1) The Sheriff may appoint: 4 (i) Deputy sheriffs and other personnel in accordance with the 5 county budget; and 6 (ii) A chief deputy sheriff, or the managerial equivalent, who shall 7 serve at the pleasure of the Sheriff. 8 (2) The Sheriff may not refuse to reappoint a deputy sheriff without just 9 cause. 10 Article – Criminal Procedure 11 15–406. 12 (a) This section applies only in Caroline County. 13 (b) (1) The State’s Attorney’s salary is [80%] 85% of the salary of a judge of 14 the District Court of Maryland. 15 (2) The State’s Attorney is entitled to reimbursement for expenses under 16 the Standard State Travel Regulations. 17 (c) The State’s Attorney may not engage in the private practice of law. 18 SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That, pursuant to Article III, § 35 19 of the Maryland Constitution, this Act may not be construed to extend or apply to the salary 20 or compensation of the State’s Attorney for Caroline County and the Sheriff of Caroline 21 County while serving in a term of office beginning before the effective date of this Act, but 22 the provisions of this Act concerning the salary or compensation of the State’s Attorney for 23 Caroline County and the Sheriff of Caroline County shall take effect at the beginning of the 24 next following term of office. This limitation does not apply to an individual appointed or 25 elected after the effective date of this Act to fill out an unexpired term. 26 SECTION 3. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall take effect 27 October 1, 2022. 28
