A BILL ENTITLED 
 
AN ACT concerning 1 
 
Baltimore City Sheriff – Staffing 2 
 
FOR the purpose of increasing the number of assistant sheriffs required to be appointed by 3 
the Baltimore City Sheriff; authorizing the Sheriff to appoint certain other staff; and 4 
generally relating to staff of the Baltimore City Sheriff. 5 
 
BY repealing and reenacting, without amendments, 6 
 Article – Courts and Judicial Proceedings 7

 SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF MAR	YLAND, 16 
That the Laws of Maryland read as follows: 17 
 
Article – Courts and Judicial Proceedings 18 
 
2–316. 19 
 
 (a) This section applies only in Baltimore City. 20 
 
 (d) (1) The Sheriff shall appoint: 21 
 
 (i) An undersheriff or chief deputy sheriff; 22 
  2 	SENATE BILL 1160  
 
 
 (ii) [One] THREE assistant [sheriff] SHERIFFS; 1 
 
 (iii) Three deputy sheriff majors; 2 
 
 (iv) Three deputy sheriff captains; 3 
 
 (v) Six deputy sheriff lieutenants; 4 
 
 (vi) One secretary sheriff; and 5 
 
 (vii) One fiscal clerk sheriff. 6 
 
 (2) The Sheriff may appoint [up]: 7 
 
 (I) UP to a maximum of: 8 
 
 [(i)] 1. 9 deputy sheriff sergeants; 9 
 
 [(ii)] 2. 103 deputy sheriffs; 10 
 
 [(iii)] 3. 2 domestic violence clerks; and 11 
 
 [(iv)] 4. 2 domestic violence advocates; 12 
 
 (II) SOCIAL WORKERS ; AND 13 
 
 (III) ANY ADDITIONAL SWORN OR CIVILIAN PERSONNE L THAT 14 
ARE FUNDED BY THE SHERIFF’S OPERATING BUDGET O R BY ANY OTHER FUNDI NG 15 
SOURCE. 16 
 
 SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall take effect 17 
October 1, 2024. 18
