                    HOUSE BILL NO. 4854  A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled "The revised school code," (MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1300. the people of the state of michigan enact: Sec. 1300. (1) The board of a school district or intermediate school district or board of directors of a public school academy shall ensure that each individual who is in a school building operated by the school district, intermediate school district, or public school academy is not prohibited from or punished for wearing traditional regalia and bringing traditional objects in the school building. (2) The board of a school district or intermediate school district or board of directors of a public school academy shall ensure that each indigenous individual is permitted to wear traditional regalia and to bring traditional objects to graduation ceremonies. (3) As used in this section: (a) "Indigenous individual" means an individual who identifies as an original or first person of a region or country. (b) "School building" means either of the following: (i) A building intended to be used to provide instruction to pupils. (ii) A recreational or athletic structure or field intended to be used by pupils. (c) "Traditional objects" means any items or objects that hold cultural, religious, or ceremonial meaning, significance, or importance for indigenous individuals. (d) "Traditional regalia" means any clothing or wearable items representing the culture, religion, or traditions of indigenous individuals.

"The revised school code,"

(MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1300.

the people of the state of michigan enact:

Sec. 1300. (1) The board of a school district or intermediate school district or board of directors of a public school academy shall ensure that each individual who is in a school building operated by the school district, intermediate school district, or public school academy is not prohibited from or punished for wearing traditional regalia and bringing traditional objects in the school building.

(2) The board of a school district or intermediate school district or board of directors of a public school academy shall ensure that each indigenous individual is permitted to wear traditional regalia and to bring traditional objects to graduation ceremonies.

(3) As used in this section:

(a) "Indigenous individual" means an individual who identifies as an original or first person of a region or country.

(b) "School building" means either of the following:

(i) A building intended to be used to provide instruction to pupils.

(ii) A recreational or athletic structure or field intended to be used by pupils.

(c) "Traditional objects" means any items or objects that hold cultural, religious, or ceremonial meaning, significance, or importance for indigenous individuals.

(d) "Traditional regalia" means any clothing or wearable items representing the culture, religion, or traditions of indigenous individuals.
