                    house resolution no.289 Rep. Wozniak offered the following resolution: A resolution to declare June 27, 2024, as Public Employee Freedom Day in the state of Michigan. Whereas, The Supreme Court of the United States issued its landmark decision in JANUS v. AFSCME on June 27, 2018, affirming the constitutional rights of public sector employees regarding union membership and dues; and  Whereas, The principles of free speech and freedom of association guaranteed by the First Amendment ensure that public sector employees have the right to make decisions that are in their best interest; and  Whereas, Freedom in decision making empowers public sector workers by granting them the ability to make individual choices regarding their representation, fostering a climate of transparency and accountability within public sector unions; and  Whereas, Safeguarding employee choices in representation protects jobs and has contributed to a more equitable workplace environment by safeguarding the rights of dissenting employees and protecting their freedom from compelled political speech; and  Whereas, Michigan had the foresight to ensure workplace freedom for public sector employees six years before the JANUS decision, further demonstrating Michigans unwavering dedication to the principles of fairness and competition in employment; and  Whereas, The principles articulated in the JANUS decision continue to resonate as a cornerstone of constitutional jurisprudence, serving as a bulwark against coercion and ensuring the protection of individual liberties; and  Whereas, June 27th marks the sixth anniversary of the JANUS court decision as it continues to have a profound impact on safeguarding the constitutional rights of public sector employees across the United States; now, therefore, be it  Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare June 27, 2024, as Public Employee Freedom Day in the state of Michigan.
